Transition to Algebra
Supporting 6-12 Math Intervention
Part 3 of CESA 10's Secondary Math Intervention Series
The focus of this session will be to highlight the research behind the Transition to Algebra intervention program http://www.heinemann.com/transitiontoalgebra/. We will discuss the design principles of the program (including Algebraic Habits of Mind); an introduction to each of the units including an in-depth look at Unit 1: The Language of Algebra; and an overview of the layout of the Student Worktext and the features provided in the Teacher Guide. Like a typical day in a Transition to Algebra classroom, participants will engage in a mental mathematics activity, group problem solving, and reading and discussing a script modeling productive mathematical discussion. In addition, participants will try out several of the vaious kinds of puzzles included in the curriculum, learn about their underlying mathematics, and explore a digital suite of companion puzzle apps.
