Room 8 News

Mrs. Fitzgerald, 3rd Grade

December 6, 2015

Hello Parents and Students,

We had another fantastic (and very busy!) week. In reading we focused on making generalizations and supporting them with evidence from the text. We also reviewed story structure (plot). We also continued reading James and the Giant Peach as a class. In grammar we learned about verb-tenses (past, present, and future).

In math we learned how to solve "larger, smaller, difference" story problems using 'towers.' We learned how to make, draw, label, and write number sentences for arrays, as well as how to find the missing dimension of an array. We also learned how to write division problems four different ways, and how to divide by 2 and 5.

We continued our STEM water filtration unit by planning filter designs. Next week we will work in groups to design, build, and test a water filter.

Hallway Bulletin Board Project

Room 8 is doing a special research project which will be displayed on the cafeteria bulletin boards in January. We are researching solar energy projects in developing countries. Some of our projects will include creating an iMovie, designing donation posters using 'Pages', researching countries without electricity, building a solar oven, researching solar careers, and even using FaceTime to interview the creator of a solar infant incubator!

If you have an expertise in solar energy or have experienced being in a place without access to electricity, we would love to have you come and talk to our class! Send me an email if you're interested and we can set up a time.

Field Trip

We will be watching a holiday play at the Sunnyvale Community Theater (550 E. Remington Drive, Sunnyvale) on Wednesday, December 9. Just a reminder that all permission slips and checks are due by Monday 12/7.

We will be traveling to the theater by bus and we will be having lunch at the theater. Students need to wear their spirit shirt and bring a bag lunch on that day.
