In the Know
Social Studies: The student will learn when new groups move into an area, existing groups may experience change. Interactions between indigenous and migrant groups often result in cultural transformation. The student will know: The types of government, language, food, shelter, and cultural traditions of various American Indian groups (e.g. Algonquian, Iroquois, Siouan, Tuscarora, Occaneechi, Tutelo, the Waxhaw, Catawba and Cherokee). How the culture, everyday life and status of American Indian groups changed after the arrival of Europeans. For example: American Indians were displaced as Europeans arrived and cleared land to build settlements.
Mrs. Dalton: Math-Students will be learning how to use place value to Rename numbers. They will also work on Rounding, Factors, Multiples, Primes, and Composites. Next, we will turn our focus to Multiplicative Comparisons. Finally, we will study Area and Perimeter. It will be a jam-packed couple of months! The NC Math Check-In will be November the 8th.
SCIENCE: Students from Mrs. Marvin's class will complete our unit on Weathering, Erosion and Deposition. Mrs. Dalton's class will begin our unit on Volcanoes and Earthquakes, moving into our study of Fossils.

Mrs. Marvin's Maternity Leave
As many of you may know I am expecting a baby girl soon. I will be taking 12 weeks leave. I will miss each one of my students while I am away on maternity leave, but trust that they will continue to thrive under the guidance of my interim/substitute.
In my absence, Mrs. Beth Shoffner will be teaching my classes. Some of you may already be familiar with her, as she was the librarian at Oakwood in the past. I feel confident that she will be a good fit for the needs of my students. Mrs. Dalton will still be instructing students in math and science.
During my time of maternity leave, I will be happy to continue to answer emails and phone calls from students and parents. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to leave me a message by email at marvinla@hickoryschools.net. I look forward to seeing you all again when I return to the classroom and returning to work with your children.
