West Irondequoit CSD update from Aaron Johnson
October 8, 2021
Dear Families,
As we close out Spirit Week and Homecoming, I'd like to thank our fantastic staff and spirited students for making it great. Although we remain under a pandemic with added challenges and stress, it's great to see special activities and increased engagement across the board, thanks to the dedication of our staff, you and your children.
STRATEGIC PLAN (2021-26) - COMMUNITY SURVEY FEEDBACK
From prior communications, you're likely aware of highlights from our new Strategic Plan and basic information about how it emerged. In early November, every resident and staff member will receive a booklet summarizing the work along with opportunities to discuss. Until then, we'll provide short summaries of specific aspects to deepen the collective understanding. For this week, that focus is the community survey.
Last May, we offered a 60-item survey to families to understand the perceptions related to the District. With 600-plus respondents, the University of Rochester researchers told us the response was far greater than other districts our size. According to the results, more than 90% rated our schools above average and excellent. A 2009 national survey of 3,200 parents asked to similarly rate their schools resulted in a 55% satisfaction rate. As you can see, there's a high level of satisfaction in our schools. So the question becomes, how do you build on peak performance?
Below are some of the examples to do just that, thanks to the survey. As we continue to unpack the Strategic Plan, you'll see how our Strategic Planning Council used this and other feedback and data to form the focus areas and objectives outlined in the plan. Opportunities for growth based on the community survey includes:
- Fair application of regulations, policies and rules
- Attention to the whole child, including social and emotional learning and leadership development for all
- The District is an ally to diversity, equity and inclusion
- Effective development of cultural awareness and acceptance
- Use of homework to support student learning
- Improvements to communication systems
- Increased opportunities for student and parent voice and involvement in decision-making
Enjoy the three-day weekend and please read one more important item below on new COVID-19 guidance from the Monroe County Department of Public Health that we just received this week.
In partnership,
