Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
Welcome back and a Happy New Year to you all. We have great things planned for 2020 and it begins this week! One of the ideals and messages that we consistently spread throughout the school is embracing a positive attitude and taking control and ownership over learning.
There is one semester left to complete at your child’s current grade level and there’s still much to learn and discover. We would like to partner with you to ensure that our students continue to persevere through those moments that may seem too tough to bear and to know that we will support them throughout their educational journey. It takes great effort to learn that next math concept, whether it’s multiplication and fractions, or understanding the author’s purpose or viewpoint.
Let’s know and believe…...
It’s a good day - to have a good day.
Today. Right now.
The alarm buzzer may very well have shocked you awake a little too soon. And your toes that reached for the cold floor may have recoiled somewhat in icy anticipation. And the face that stared back at you all bleary eyed from the bathroom mirror may not have inspired a huge amount of confidence in you that today is a good day to have a good day.
Our days are not infinite.
They need to be appreciated for the truly remarkable opportunities that they really are. Experiences and magical moments and beautiful memories surround us on a daily basis - right within our reach.
And while there may be moments or hours or even huge chunks of your day when you feel frazzled and tense and ready to quietly implode … just remember - it’s still a good day - to have a good day.
Right now!
Chin up; eyes searching for opportunities for optimism; a face that’s ready to smile and a heart that’s open to the potential of an even better day to come.
As with most things in life, the choice generally lies within our grasp and control.
So, here’s to fewer lukewarm days … and the sunrise of so many, many more good days.
Continue to strive and give your best for the remainder of this school year.
Respectfully,
Mrs. Dee Copas
2nd Quarter Student Achievement Records
As we continue to evolve with technology and cost-saving measures, parents of elementary students will now receive achievement records digitally through Infinite Campus starting with the 2019-2020 school year. Paper copies of achievement records will not be sent home unless internet access is not available. If this is the case please let your teacher or principal know as soon as possible.
At the end of each quarter, you will receive an e-mail from Infinite Campus (from the building) alerting you that achievement records are available to view through the parent portal.
Below are directions for accessing your child’s achievement records in IC. The achievement record will be a PDF version which can be downloaded and printed.
Please feel free to reach out to your teacher with questions and concerns.
Celebration of Civil Rights
Monday, January 20th is not just a day off from school and work, it's an opportunity for us to look back at our history and celebrate the progress we've made in the country, and acknowledge the work that still lies ahead. The celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is recognized throughout our country. To learn more, please visit this website:

Second Step
Here at Violet, we are continuing our implementation of the Second Step Program (See copy of letter sent home on 8/26/19 below.) Throughout the second half of the school year, students will be introduced to monthly Second Step themes. This month, the theme is Skills for Learning. Why Skills for Learning Matter
To be successful in school, students must be able to regulate their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. The skills required to do this are known as “self-regulation skills”. The Second Step program promotes the development of self-regulation by teaching skills for learning, such as focusing attention, listening, being assertive, and using self-talk.
Students with more ability to self-regulate are more likely to:
Have better math, literacy, and vocabulary skills
Have higher academic achievement
Graduate from high school
Choose prosocial responses
Parent Reinforcement of Skills for Learning
You can reinforce skills your students are learning at home via the Homelinks (worksheet) that will be sent home with your student after each lesson. This worksheet will include a brief summary of what the student learned in class that day. In addition, pay specific attention to the “Practice at Home” and the “Activity” heading listed on the Homelink.
Make sure to join SecondStep.org with the following Activation Key per your student's grade level. With the Activation Key you will be able to watch videos about the Second Step program and get information about what your student is learning.
