Madrona February Newsletter

February 2nd, 2023

Hello Madrona Community,

Happy February 2nd and Black History Month everyone! In honor of Black History Month, we as a community will engage our scholars in the following activities:

  • Restorative Justice Practices with an emphasis around empathy and loving engagement
  • Exploring our collective diversity and its impact on equity and fairness.
  • Embracing and acknowledging our gender identity
  • Understanding the power of our intergenerational community
  • Learning about the influence of Hidden Figures in our American History

There will be three assemblies this month.

  • Our first assembly will be on Friday, February 3rd at 1:20 pm with Seattle JazzEd. This will be a whole school event in the cafeteria.
  • Our second assembly will be our Black History Month Assembly on Friday, February 17th @ 1:30 pm in the cafeteria. During this assembly, our 5th graders will be our MCs as well as giving presentations, the Madrona choir will be singing two songs, and Ms. Lopez's 4th graders will be performing a play.
  • Our third assembly will be a lovely performance by the Fifth Avenue Theatre on February 28th @ 1:00 pm.
Parents are welcome to attend all assemblies. Masks are encouraged but not required to attend.

Smart Watches and Bluetooth Audio Devices

We are noticing an increased volume of students coming to school with electronic devices such as Smartphones, Smart Watches, and headphones. These devices are becoming a huge distraction to students during their learning time. Smart Watches should be in "school/airplane mode" during the school day, including recess, and should only be used during the school day for time telling. Air Pods or other Bluetooth headphones/earbuds should not be used during the school day. Please have your student keep these valuable items at home or in their backpack. If your student needs to contact you during the school day, they can come to the office to call home. In addition, if you need to get a message to your student during the school day, please call the office and we will gladly relay the message to your scholar.

Thank you for your support.
