Mathews Weekly
Week of December 11, 2017
From Grace
Hello, Wonderful Mathews Community! We've had quite an interesting semester - starting off with a solar eclipse, leading into a hurricane, and wrapping up with real snow in Austin - wow! I hope each of you was able to enjoy the winter wonderland that took over our city on Thursday and that the students had fun on their day off. I know I felt child-like joy at the beauty of the snow blanketing the area and was truly thankful for the opportunity to experience it.
As we only have seven days left in the semester, this will be the last Weekly Message for 2017. We're having a fine arts week at school - with performances by our kinder students, our band, orchestra, and choir, and Fairy Tale Theater troupe, along with field trips to Zach Scott Theater and the Long Center to see the Nutcracker. This connection with the arts is inspiring and taps into the needs of the whole child. Exploring music, dance, and theater is one of the many things I'm grateful for here at Mathews.
Looking back at the last four and half months, I am incredibly proud of our students and staff - the growth over the course of these first two quarters has been amazing to watch. From students who have discovered the joy of reading to the satisfaction of figuring out a challenging math problem to the pride that comes with creating a solution to a design challenge or social problem. Some of our classes/grade levels will hold learning celebrations this week, making this learning public, and giving our students a chance to have an audience for their work. There is no better feeling than seeing children persevere and make academic and social progress and we are honored to be able to work with our future inventors, doctors, teachers, leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, and community members. I am convinced that these children will change the world for the better!
Enjoy the last few days of school this semester and enjoy your winter break. However you celebrate, from all of us at school to all of you, have a safe, happy, and peaceful holiday season!

Important Information
Easy Ways to Support our School
Did you know that you can support Mathews while you shop for groceries, supplies, and goods?
Mathews participates in the Box Tops for Education program which gives us $0.10 for each Box Top collected and turned in. Many of the items you already purchase have Box Tops on them; simply cut out the Box Tops and drop them off in the pink boxes on the window sills by the cafeteria. In November, we made almost $25.00. While that may not seem like a lot, it can add up quickly and we appreciate all the help. If you'd like to learn more about this program, this link has helpful information: https://www.boxtops4education.com/about
