ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination
has been administered within the previous 12 months, and that evaluation is on file in

New Reading Curriculum Adoption
Dear Parents,
Last school year, District 64 launched an English Language Arts Review Committee to take a closer look at our instructional practices and resources for reading, writing, word study, and speaking/listening. After an extensive study, the Committee recommended the adoption of two resources to support reading instruction: Units of Study - Reading at the K-5 level and Schoolwide Reading Fundamentals at the 6-8 level. These resources will be fully implemented during the 2018-19 school year, with early implementation occurring in some classrooms this fall.
Both resources are founded on research that supports the Reading Workshop model as best practice in reading instruction. In Reading Workshop, instruction begins with an explicit mini lesson that targets reading skills and strategies. Students then practice these strategies and skills in shared texts before applying them independently in their own texts. Because these texts are matched to students based on their individual instructional levels and interests, the Reading Workshop provides for differentiated instruction and promotes student engagement.
Assessment during Reading Workshop is ongoing. Teachers conference with students to learn more about how they are applying reading skills and strategies. Assignments and class activities are designed to assess students’ comprehension and identify the strategies and skills students need to learn next.
The Reading Workshop Model and these new resources will help District 64 achieve an important objective within our 2020 Vision Strategic Plan: providing a rigorous education for all students, within an aligned, articulated curriculum.
This spring, all teachers will participate in professional development to implement Reading Workshop. To support our transition, some teachers at each school will begin this work this fall. Your child’s teacher will share more information about this at Parent Night.
Please do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Lori Hinton Lopez
Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning

Erin's Law
Dear Parent/Guardian,
The Illinois School Code requires school districts to provide age-appropriate instruction, beginning in pre-K, on the topic of sexual assault and abuse prevention. This curricular mandate is known as “Erin’s Law.”
In compliance with the law, District 64 addresses this topic through its Great Body Shop curriculum, published by the Children’s Health Market Inc. At each grade, the curriculum presents the topic in a developmentally appropriate and sensitive manner while covering such concepts as “body privacy” and “safe” versus “unsafe touches.”
The topic will be covered at a time determined by your child’s teacher or the grade level teacher team at your school. Teachers will notify parents before they begin instruction on the topic. For your information, you may arrange to preview instructional materials used to teach this or any other health topic. You may request a preview by contacting one of us at the email addresses shown below.
District 64 recognizes that parents hold the primary responsibility for their child’s education. As parents, you may elect to excuse your child from instruction on this or any sensitive health topic. If you choose this option, please submit a written request to the building principal.
Sincerely,
