Mrs. Shields' Weekly Update
1st Grade Ireland Elementary
Week of March 2, 2020 (Read Across America Week and Irish Program)
Next week is Read Across America Week! We have a lot of fun events planned all week. It is also Dr. Seuss's birthday, so we will be reading all kinds of Dr. S books. If your child has a favorite they would like to share, send it in! I'd love to read it to them! Check out the link below to see all of the dress up days planned and Flashlight Friday! No flashlights necessary for us, we already have a class set! :)
IRISH PROGRAM-TSHIRTS
If you haven't yet, please send in your child's green Ireland t-shirt to school by next Tuesday so that we are ready to go for our Irish Program on Thursday! :)
Our learning goals for this week include:
- Wonders Unit 5, Lesson 5
- Read and spell words with long e sound, spelled -y and -ey
- Read high frequency words: found, hard, near, woman, would, write
- Read compound words
- Math, Money: Identifying coins and counting pennies, nickels, and dimes
- Math Facts 11-15
Math Homework
Math homework was sent home Friday this week in a packet of counting coins pages. Please feel free to send them in as your child finishes them. We continue to struggle with switching our skip counting by 5's and 10's. Any practice you can give at home is greatly appreciated. Some just need to brush on on their 5's especially.
Dump out piggy banks (no quarters) and let them explore the coins, sort by type, and even count groups of pennies, nickels and dimes. Set up a pretend store and "buy" things! Every little bit of practice helps!
Class Picture Day
March 9th is group picture day!
Thank you for all you do to help support your child's learning at home.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Have a great week!
