Terra Linda Tiger Tale
June 30, 2020
Principal's Message
Dear Terra Linda Families,
I hope you are staying safe this summer. I have an exciting opportunity to share with you today! Starting next week, students are invited to join in a summer reading challenge! Learn about each week's challenge by joining a Zoom session each Monday at 3:30pm from July 6th through August 3rd. Terra Linda is partnering with Cedar Mill in this fun opportunity for students. We hope it helps your students to stay engaged in learning and connected to school this summer. See below for more information.
In this edition of the Tiger Tale, you will find information previously sent out via the Tiger Tale or District communications. My goal is to keep important information at the forefront as well as to welcome our new families to Terra Linda and provide them with the same information that had been shared previously. Despite our school office being closed until mid-August, we are accepting online registrations throughout the summer.
Please know that I am checking our school's phone messages throughout the summer. If you have any questions, please leave a message and I will call you back. 503-356-2490.
A reminder that the 2020 BSD Parent Survey -- Return to School closes at the end of the day today. Join Mrs. Batsell and Ms. Chamberlain, Principals at Terra Linda and Cedar Mill, every Monday from July 6th through August 3rd at 3:30 pm for a Zoom Summer Reading Challenge with fun learning engagement opportunities!
During our first session, we will join other Beaverton Schools for a special session on Sketchnoting as we explore topics we wonder about. Special Guest Teacher, Ms. Carter, will teach us how to Sketchnote what we are reading about! Bring some paper and pencil!
During our sessions, we will also use a platform called Padlet. This tool provides a place for us to share resources and learning with each other and across our two schools. Students can practice posting to Padlet before our first session by sharing something they are doing this summer. Click the Padlet Practice link to see what Mrs. Batsell and Ms. Chamberlain have been up to and then post something to share with the group!
Click the images or the button below to view an overview of sessions and access the Zoom ID and Password information. Each session will be recorded and later posted to SeeSaw for those who are unable to join. If you do not want your child's image recorded and posted, feel free to sign in without your camera turned on.
Hope you can join and keep up your summer reading!

June 24th Message from BSD: Return to School
Thank you for your patience as we navigate how our students will be returning to school in the fall. Based on recommendations and requirements from the Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority, we’re in the process of developing a comprehensive plan that addresses a variety of issues: how to protect students and staff from the spread of COVID-19, how to safely distance students during school and while being transported by bus, and how to ensure students continue to make progress on their academic goals.
While the plan hasn’t been finalized, we want to share the overall framework with you, as your family will have a choice to make in the coming month.
As we approach the next school year, your student will have two possible paths within the District:
1) Attend your regular BSD school
Given the health protocols mandated by the state, it won’t be possible for all of our students to return to school at the same time. We simply can’t guarantee the 35 square feet per child, as required. So we’re looking to implement a hybrid model. Under this scenario, student groups — called attendance groups or cohorts — will attend in-person classes at school using staggered schedules. For example, half of the students may attend one day, while the other half may participate in remote online learning from home. Then the cohorts would switch. The exact schedules will vary based on the different grade levels: elementary, middle school and high school.
Despite our best efforts to ensure safety, we recognize that there may be parents who are not comfortable sending their children back to a physical school. We also understand that some students who may be enrolled in specialized programs, who may be classified as medically fragile/high risk, or who may have a COVID-19 diagnosis will need a temporary alternative to the hybrid model. We’re currently working on developing online learning solutions for these cases.
2) Enroll in the new FLEX Online School through BSD
On this path, students will continue to be enrolled in the District, but they’ll be enrolled in a fully virtual K-12 school called FLEX Online. This option is a permanent school; if students need to switch to their regular BSD schools, they’ll be asked to do so at the end of a semester. BSD teachers will instruct using a curriculum specifically designed for online learning. (For a student eligible for Special Education services and/or a 504 accommodation plan, an IEP or 504 meeting may be required to determine whether or not your child’s IEP or 504 can be implemented through a fully online model and/or if IEP or 504 amendments are needed as a result of the student’s full-time enrollment in FLEX Online.)
To enroll in FLEX Online, you must complete an application between July 1-24, 2020. The short timeline is necessary to allow us time to arrange for the appropriate level of staffing. For more information on the school and application process, click here: https://flex.beaverton.k12.or.us/
We invite you to share your feedback and ask questions regarding both the return-to-school plan and the new FLEX Online School. Please join us for one of the following Q&A sessions:

June 25th Message from Superintendent Grotting: WE Believe Black Lives Matter
Dear Beaverton Staff, Students and Community,
WE believe that Black Lives Matter. WE will continue to assert that Black Lives Matter until there is evidence that shows our Black and African American students and staff are thriving in our Beaverton schools. There is clearly more work to be done to become an anti-racist school district.
Here are several actions we are taking to move on our commitment to being an anti-racist organization:
Listening Sessions: This week, Superintendent Grotting held Listening Sessions with
Black and African American students and staff. They courageously shared their stories about being Black or African American in Beaverton schools. Their stories illustrated how institutional racism has manifested itself in our school district.
Staff Development: We will set the expectation, and require that all staff and School Board members engage in professional development that racism, in all its forms, will not be tolerated in our schools and facilities. This includes a Leadership Summit for all administrators, principals, and supervisors this summer, focusing on a commitment to anti-racism and racial equity.
Use of the Equity Lens: In all considerations and decisions, we will use the BSD Equity Lens to answer the following questions:
Whose voice is and isn't represented in this decision?
Who does this decision benefit or burden?
Is this decision in alignment with the BSD Equity Policy?
Does this decision close or widen the access, opportunity, and expectation gaps?
2020-2021 Budget: We have applied an equity-based approach to staffing our schools. Based on state funding, we will prioritize the hiring of a Talent Acquisition Administrator to lead efforts to recruit and retain diverse staff.
Review of School Resource Officer Program: We are in conversation with the Beaverton Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to evaluate the School Resource Officer Program partnership. While we value this partnership, at this time it is critical we re-evaluate the presence and engagement of police in our schools.
Social Studies Curriculum: As part of our cyclical review this year, we will review, adopt and plan implementation of K-12 curriculum materials that accurately reflect the history of Black, Indigenous and People of Color.
Hate Speech Language: We are revising our 2020-21 Student/Family Handbook to reflect our commitment to learning environments that are free from hate speech. It will be an expectation that we will interrupt it when we hear it and that there will be consequences including restorative justice action.
On Friday, June 26, all school reader boards will read Black Lives Matter. We will leave this message up until Monday, July 6, when we will start promoting Return to School virtual information sessions.
In addition, we will allow the community-based signs and artwork to remain on some of our school fences until next Monday, June 29. We want to show appreciation for the community voice and display of support, while also following Board Policy and Administrative Regulation KJA, which addresses the posting of signs on District property. Community-based signs will be removed per this policy/regulation after June 29. As stewards of the physical property of our schools and facilities, we must ensure that our campuses are consistent with established policy/regulation.
Thank you for your understanding and consideration of the steps we are taking to become an anti-racist school district. This is a process and we acknowledge that there is a lot of learning to do, and we are committed to moving forward. We look to continue to learn and grow with our community in these efforts.
Sincerely,
Don Grotting, Superintendent
