Every week, until October 15th, we will salute the contributions of some of our Hispanic heroes.

Karla Monterroso
Karla Monterroso is the CEO of Code2040 and a board chair at One Degree, a nonprofit startup working to eradicate poverty.
Monterroso has a passion for social equality and has devoted her career to scaling social enterprises. Prior to joining Code2040, Monterroso worked as the director of talent and director of advocate engagement at Health Leads, where she established processes that helped the organization triple in size to more than 70 employees.
She first joined Code2040 in 2014 as VP of programs before stepping up to CEO in 2018. In this current role, Monterroso is helping to build the largest racial equity community in tech and to remove the barriers that prevent the full participation of Black and Latinx people in the tech industry.
Speaking to reporter Dexter Thomas at SXSW, Monterroso advocates for diversity as a competency, just like computer engineering. She points out that when we have a software problem in front of us, we have no problem calling on an engineer to help, but we don’t view solving diversity problems as requiring the same expertise.
Too often, Monterroso explains on TechCrunch’s CTRL+T podcast, the burden of change at any given company falls on already marginalized individuals: “What we’re really talking about is the integration of the workforce. You have a segregated tech workforce, you are integrating it. You are asking the first people at the table to be the tech Ruby Bridges [the first African American student to integrate public schools in the American South] and to come in and be full-throated in their opinions, but you are not setting up the safety mechanisms for those people to be able to do that safely.”
These expectations ultimately create a demanding and hostile work environment for people of color, leading many to drop out of the industry after just a couple years, Monterroso says.
By establishing a community and providing ongoing training, career programs, and knowledge sharing, Code2040 aims to equip minority technologists with everything they need to work toward racial equity in the industry.

The Boettcher Foundation webinars
Hello, students-
The Boettcher Foundation is hosting webinars on “Everything You Need to Know About Scholarships.” During these webinars we will discuss how students can “ACE” their college and scholarship applications, including tips on how to help your applications stand out. You can register to attend one of the webinars by clicking on the date you wish to attend (please note that you only need to attend one, as the same information will be presented during each webinar):
Because our Zoom attendee number is limited, please only register if you will be able to watch the webinar during the scheduled date and time. While we encourage you to join in real-time so that you can ask questions. We will not be recording the webinars, but if you cannot attend during a scheduled time you can still watch an abbreviated recording of the presentation on the FAQs and Resources page of our website (located under the question asking if the Boettcher Foundation provides resources on how to be competitive in a scholarship application). We have a Spanish language version of the recording on our website, as well.
We also encourage you to visit our website to learn more about the Boettcher Scholarship.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Panion | Scholarship Program Manager

We encourage you and your students to visit our website to learn more about the Boettcher Scholarship, including our two new scholarship funding models. We also recommend that your students visit the “Application Process, Eligibility & Selection Criteria” and “Frequently Asked Questions” pages on our website to help them make informed decisions about whether to apply, as our application process is competitive and time-consuming.
Colorado high school seniors who meet our application requirements are invited to apply directly through our website (https://boettcherfoundation.org/scholarship-application/). Please encourage students to start working on their application as soon as possible in order to meet the student application deadline of November 1 at 5 p.m.

Thoughts for the Week
Sleep. We all need just a little more. Teens in particular need more sleep, especially during the school year when they are learning. Did you know that high school age students need 8-10 hours of sleep to be able to learn every day? Middle schoolers should be sleeping 9-12 hours a day. Here are a few great articles and videos on how to help your student succeed simply by getting a longer and better night sleep!
Sleep Deprivation can lead to physical and mental health issues in teens
