Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term - Issue 12

A word from Mr Broom

This week and next are my favourite weeks of the year. Why you may ask? It's the time of the year where I step into classes for an afternoon while each member of staff takes time out to Christmas shop! It costs us nothing and it's a fabulous opportunity to get to know our wonderful children in a different way for me. This week I've taught history to Y4, computing to Y6, music to Y5 and creative writing to Y1. I was due to spend yesterday afternoon with our Reception class but was ill unfortunately. Not to worry though, I've rearranged my diary to visit on Monday afternoon. I can't wait.

Meanwhile, preparations for our Christmas Fair are well underway. A massive thank you to all those involved with our wonderful Friends of Hungate who are working very hard to raise invaluable funds for our children. I look forward to seeing you all next Wednesday, and this year's event promises to be bigger than ever!

Finally, it's been another busy week with many prospective parents for September 2019 visiting school. All seemed impressed and I can see our requests for admission rising significantly for next September.

Have a lovely week.

Parent Helpers Required

Our teachers would really like to know if any of our parents / carers / grandparents would like to support us by spending some time in school reading with children. If you can give an afternoon, please let your class teacher know. They will be very grateful!

Nut Allergies

If your child brings either a snack or a pack up to school, please help us to protect some of our children who have nut allergies by checking that the products you send with them do not contain any nuts. Thank you.

School Attendance

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 3 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 99.2%!

Our average attendance this week is 96.4% which is back above the national average. Well done everyone!

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.

Infection Control Information

You may be aware that some schools in the area have been closed this week following an outbreak of suspected norovirus (winter vomiting bug); we have had a very small number of cases of sickness and / or diarrhoea in school this week. Please remember if a child suffers from diarrhoea OR sickness they must be kept at home and not brought back into nursery or school until 48 hours after their symptoms have disappeared.

If your child suffers diarrhoea or vomiting you will be called and asked to collect your child as soon as practicable. It is vital you co-operate with this to prevent the spread of infection to others. Prevention is always best. Please remind children that thorough hand washing and drying is the most important factor in preventing the spread of such illness. Although hands may look clean, germs picked up by touching solid items and surfaces can be passed on when you touch something, someone or food. Hand hygiene is important, even if you are not unwell, and also helps to prevent the spread of other conditions such as coughs, colds, impetigo and threadworm.

Mobiles on Site

Our teachers have planned exciting lessons for all our children and when they leave school, we're confident that they will want to share their day with you. Conversation is really important to your child's development and for this reason, we're asking that you refrain from using your phone on the school site at drop off and pick up times.
