Adrian VI
The forerunner to the Catholic Reformation was Pope Adrian VI. He helped out Cardinal Ximenes de Cisneros with the Spanish reform. He wanted to use his papal authority to bring the Spanish revival to Rome. He put a lot of effort into reforming the church. He died a year after he was elected pope. Pope Adrian assisted in the reformation by locating different areas of the Church that needed help,

Clement VII
Adrian’s successor was Clement VII. He was very smart, but lacked self-confidence and did not take much action. He wanted to educate the clergy and religious orders, Emperor Charles V and Francis I of France.fought for control of the Church council. They barred any bishops from other areas from the council. Wars between Charles and Francis continuously delayed attempts to call an ecumenical council.
