Monday Message
From the desk of Dr. Harrell
January 13, 2020
Good Evening-
This Monday Message is full of district information and activities our district is involved in. This edition once again displays our students doing amazing work. They are working with community leaders; participating in campus activities; questioning, experimenting, and thinking like scientists; and using their skills in robotics representing our high school and district. It is engaging activities and experiences such as these that get our students to dream and realize opportunities exist and await them.
Each one of us has dreamed of what we would like to become or would like to accomplish in our lifetime. Our students have dreams and I hope they share them with you. No doubt there are times we question ourselves and self-doubt makes an appearance and if allowed can often take over. However, the truth remains with perseverance, hard work, and belief in ourselves and others anything is possible. "I Believe" by Bon Jovi serves as the perfect backdrop for this message about Believing in Your Dreams... Pass It On.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Yeah!
All I know is what I’ve been sold,
You can read my life like a fortune told.
And courage built I won’t let go,
What we need right now is ....soul!
I can’t do this, you can’t do that,
They feed us lines but I won’t act,
And all good things will come to pass.
But the truth is all you have to have,
And would you lie for it? Cry for it? Die for it? Would you?
I believe, I believe.
Believe we’re still worth,
The fight you’ll see,
There’s hope for this world tonight.
I believe, I believe.
Believe. Pass It On!
I Believe In ‘U’

Leona River Restoration Project
On January 9, 2020, Uvalde C.I.S.D.’s 3rd through 6th grade, Gifted and Talented students embarked on a real-world problem in our community, the Leona River Restoration Project. This project is an experience-based project in partnership with the City of Uvalde Parks and Recreation Department, Nueces River Authority, and El Progreso Memorial Library STEAM Expo. This project is enhancing our current Gifted and Talented Program by exposing our students to a real-world problem, right in our community. This 3-year project is an experience-based project which will be showcased annually at the El Progreso Memorial Library STEAM Expo.
Uvalde C.I.S.D.’s 3rd through 6th grade, Gifted and Talented students began the exploration process with a tour of the Leona River guided by Rob Fowler. The tour included a discussion on the current condition of the river. Students then moved to the Civic Center to begin the discussion and planning of how to improve the Leona River. Mary Bales and Sky Jones-Lewy, representatives from the Nueces River Authority lead classroom presentations.
We are looking forward to including more community agencies as our students begin working on their projects. The annual STEAM Expo showcase will allow our students to share with the community the progress of their projects and continue to move forward.
Morales Junior High Local Science Fair
I am currently getting together the top 6 to 8 students who will advance to regionals.
Overall the event was a huge success with 37 out of 42 pre-ap students who participated. I was also provided some excellent feedback from our judges as to how to make the process smoother for them as well.

iFly
A selected group of students visited iFly in San Antonio for a great experience. Students participating were from the UHS College, Career & Military Readiness, N.J.R.O.T.C, and Morales JHS S.T.E.M program. The group was under the leadership of Lt. Tidd and had a very successful trip. The 25 participating students took the opportunity to "Rep the U" after their flights and course work. The experience will leave a last impression with students as they begin to consider the next steps after high school.
KVOU UCISD Weekly Update
On Thursday, January 9th, our district was represented on Coyote Country 104.9 KVOU by Dr. Harrell, Rob Fowler, and Anabel White. The interview segment included district information, district events, and highlighted our Board of Trustees in honor of Board Appreciation Month. Please join us in appreciating our Board of Trustees for their service to our district.
Mansfield's Pizzeria
Students in Mrs. Mansfield's Classroom enjoyed a hands-on, interactive, and discussion filled lesson on fractions and fact vs. opinion. The classroom was transformed into Mansfield's Pizzeria with students wearing chef hats to roleplay! Students completed fraction task cards using pizza and toppings then created their own to glue into their pizza box. Students also completed a fact and opinion spaghetti sort. The activities were very well received by students with students stating, "Wow! We are like real Chefs", "I wish we could do things like this every day", and "Fractions are FUN!" This is sure to be a lesson remembered!

TRS Regional Offices Survey
As we published in our December Update newsletter to Reporting Employers (REs) as well as our December TRS News for active members and retirees, TRS is exploring the idea of opening TRS regional offices across the state in order to expand our member service delivery options to our ever-growing membership.
We would greatly appreciate it if you could please notify your employees that TRS has emailed a TRS Regional Offices Survey to active members and retirees to get their input on regional offices. We highly encourage them to participate as we value all comments and are always looking for ways in which we can better serve our members. The deadline for members to complete the survey is Jan. 21, 2020.
Members can check the TRS website, social media channels, newsletters and publications for updates to the project.
Thank you for your support and coordination efforts to help us make this survey a success.
Sincerely,
Teacher Retirement System of Texas
