What Is Genetics?

Genetics is the study of genes, heredity, and genetic variations of living organisms. Which is the study of how heredity is transmitted from parents to offsprings.

Gregor Mendel

He was born July 20, 1822 and died January 6, 1884 with kidney inflammation. He has 2 sisters Veronica and Theresia. His parents are Rosine and Anton Mendel. He researched for 8 years with 10,000 different plants. He chose to use pea plants for his experiment because of many distinct varieties. He thought the offsprings could be quickly and easily produced.

Alfred Day Hershey

He was born December 4th, 1908 and died May 22nd, 1997 with congestive heart failure. His parents were Alma and Robert Hershey. He had one son named Peter with Harrit his spouse since 1945. He was the Director of Genetics Research Unit in 1962. He discovered that DNA was the genetic material of life in general. Which looked toward that DNA is a blueprint of every living thing. This laid the ground for modern molecular genetics. He found that different strains of bacteriophage can exchange genetic material both infect the same bacterial cell which makes a hybrid of two. It was called "Genetic Recombination".

Babara McClintock

She was born June 16th, 1902 and died September 2nd, 1992. She never married or had children. She had 2 sisters and a brother with her parents named Sara and Thomas McClintock. Girls was not allowed to major in genetics at Cornell but she became a member of a group who corn cytogenetics which was the study of genetic at a cellular level. Her work focused on the genetics of corn and the relationship between plant reproduction and subsequent mutation. She showed that certain genes were responsible for turning on and off physical characteristics. She explained theories of genetic information from one generation to the next.
