KMS Up2Date
April 9, 2021
Principal's Message
Plans are being finalized for our in-person return scheduled for Monday, April 26. It has been a busy week and a true team effort in getting things ready. Our faculty, staff, administrative assistants and custodians have all contributed to ensuring that KMS is ready to go! There are a few things that families need to keep in mind:
Students’ teams/teachers will not change, but schedules may change.
Students will have access to fourth quarter updated schedules on April 25 through their ASPEN accounts.
Schedule changes may have been necessary because we are continuing to maintain six feet of distance in all classrooms and cafeterias. This required us to shift pods within the teams.
KMS will remain in stable pods throughout the remainder of the year.
If families requested transportation, students should be at their assigned bus stop on time.
Our faculty has been thoughtful in preparing rosters for the students’ return to school. Their input has been invaluable.
School counselors, teachers, and administrators will be available throughout the day to answer any questions especially from those students who are returning from the virtual model.
If a student is now fully in-person, he or she is expected to be in the building everyday. Students no longer can opt to “virtually learn from home” unless it’s a COVID related absence, such as a quarantine.
We will continue to maintain all of the safety and security measures that we have implemented this year.
Masks will continue to be required.
We are very excited about having the majority of our students back. We are so fortunate at KMS to have the facilities that we do which will allow us to bring back our students and still maintain health and safety protocols.
The Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins Monday evening, April 12 at nightall. I want to wish a Ramadan Kareem to the members of the KMS community who observe this season.
RICAS testing continues this week. Please see the updated schedule below for details. We are encouraged by the enthusiasm that our students have demonstrated during the testing period. They are taking their time and using any resource that is available to them. Please encourage good attendance this week so that we can continue to maintain the positive momentum. Thanks for always collaborating with us in supporting our students so that we can help them to learn and grow.
Wishing you a great week,
Dennis Morrell

Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) Workshop Series
Rhode Island PBS Education Services is excited to announce the Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) Workshop Series! Presented in both English & Spanish, in collaboration with RI Kids Count, Massachusetts Strategies for Children and RI & MA SEIU Education and Support Fund, SSIC’s goal is to support parents, caregivers and community providers with FREE tools and resources from Sesame Street that help increase successful outcomes for children, both in school and in life. Participants receive a complimentary Sesame Street care package, along with a certificate for PD hours, approved by the Center for Early Learning Professionals.
This workshop is intended for adult caregivers, parents and guardians, not for participation by children. Please register for either our English or Spanish sessions. Project made possible with generous support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB.)
Rhode Island Virtual Tutoring
Our names are Julia Hasseltine and Eli Weisbord and we are two RI high school students who recently created Rhode Island Virtual Tutoring (RIVT.) Our vision for RIVT is to organize and provide free one on one weekly tutoring sessions between high school tutors and younger students, giving older RI students an opportunity to share their knowledge. We hope to create a network of students of all ages around the state of Rhode Island. Tutoring in all of the general elementary level courses and many middle school classes will be offered at the program’s launch.
The two of us are extremely excited to share this project and we hope that the program continues to grow until we can ensure that no motivated student is left without the resources they need to thrive intellectually. Please pass this on to anyone whom you feel could benefit from this opportunity!
Free Tutoring Opportunity Launching with Schoolhouse.world
Schoolhouse.world is a new online platform from Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, that matches students around the world with free tutors. The tutors provide small-group math and SAT prep tutoring for students in grades 6-12, building on the Khan Academy curriculum. Rhode Island is one of two state-level partnerships offering this opportunity to students across the state. Registration is now live on the All Course Network (ACN) and students can sign up here on EnrollRI. There is no deadline for students to sign up (though schools will still need to approve their enrollment via the ACN), no cost to LEAs or students, and no requirement to participate. Please help us spread the word to your students, teachers, parents, and communities! More information on the partnership can be found here.
