Pathway to School Librarian Leadership
Susan D.Ballard, Online Instructor at Granite State College, will share information about the creation of an innovative approach to school librarian preparation and ongoing professional development at Plymouth State University/USNH. Designed to respond to current and emerging needs in the pre-K12 learning environment, this new program is based on the foundational belief that School Librarians are essential, integral, and transformational leaders. The program focuses on developing school librarians as catalysts for school change and learning for the digital age and centers around a five-strand framework model, plus a capstone experience to provide opportunities for both pre-service candidates and in-service practitioners. Candidates will explore educational and information theory, research and methods, as well as best practice, facilitated through rich field experiences and connections with exemplary colleagues who are making strides in the development and delivery of programs and services in flexible learning environments. Come learn about new options for contemporary times.
Libraries Transform: The Expert in the Library
As part of Julie Todaro’s ALA Presidential Initiative, a group of school librarians developed a LibGuide with practitioner tools to improve professionalism in practical, philosophical and pedagogical ways. We’ll explore that workspace of curated websites, articles, videos and infographics that support the value and expertise of the school librarian. The group also developed a continuum of competencies based on the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL’s) to allow building-level school librarians to increase their professionalism through personal growth. These competencies will be reviewed and suggestions made as to how to put them to use as a discussion starter with administrators and as a complement to the soon-to-be-released AASL National Standards.
