Principal's Message - Aug. 30th

Greetings!

The Back to School Picnic was a wonderful success! It was fantastic seeing so many new and returning families all sharing a meal and getting to know one another. Thank you to everyone who helped put the event together, especially our Social Chair, Shannon Hopkins! That's what the Holy Rosary Community is all about...spreading the Gospel message of faith, service, and love through action!

It is my hope that you are finding these newsletters helpful. The format is meant to make it easy to scroll through and locate the information that you need quickly and easily. Our new secretary will be starting very soon and the letters will be sent out in both Spanish and English every week. Thank you for your patience on this matter.

I look forward to seeing all of those smiling little faces tomorrow. Remember, school starts at 8 am and ends at noon on Monday, 8/31. Beginning Tuesday, we are on to the regular full-day schedule. Have a fantastic week and please say some prayers for our staff, students, and families as we return to school for the year.

Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures for Pre-K 3 & 4

Regular Procedures:

Drop-off and Pick-up times will be 15 minutes earlier to allow for signing in and signing out. 7:45 in the morning and 2:45 in the afternoons.

We are a licensed childcare facility so we need to abide by Washington State Department of Early Learning regulations. One important regulation is that parents upon arrival with their children sign-in and also sign-out at dismissal. We are working out a system that will not cause a parking problem. Pray for us!! We are hoping to go out into the cul-de-sac in the front of the building and have you drive around till you get to one of the teachers who will hand you a clipboard for you to sign in your child. We hope to keep the carpool line moving around the cul-de-sac. However, if want to come into the building to deliver your child, you will have to follow the other carpool line that goes to the back of the school. There you will notice two lines. One is for parents to drop-off and drive off and another is a line to park by the back wall to the right of the playground. That would be the line for you! Then you get out with your child and walk all the way around the front the school between the Nun’s house and the school building on left and enter through the office front doors where you will sign-in!!!!

Don’t go in the back doors of the school building. Grades K-8 will go through there.

Rainy Day Procedures:

On rainy days, we have a different procedure. Students come in when they arrive no earlier than 7:45 a.m. Your child can be dropped off in the front and teachers will go out with umbrellas to bring them in and have you sign-in. In the afternoons, when we see your car arrive through the foyer, your child’s last name will be announced and they will go out through the front door with a teacher and umbrella and sign-out sheet. Your older siblings will hear their last name called over the Speakers and they will come down and go out through the front door with their Pre-K brother or sister.

Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures for Grades K - 8

Drop off and pick up procedures for grades K - 8 are the same as last year. For new families, you will go from S Delin Street to Fawcett Ave. Follow Fawcett between the school and the parish offices (school will be on your right). Enter through the black, iron gates and pull around the safety square. There will be one line for pull-through drop offs and one line to pull around to park. We will be outside to help your child(ren) enter/exit your vehicle safely. If parents prefer to walk their child(ren) in to the building, you may park in the spaces close to the freeway wall and use the crosswalk to walk to the safety square/classrooms. Please do not park in the spaces directly in front of the traffic line because it is difficult for cars to exit properly. You will exit out the black, iron gates next to the church and on to Delin St (near the overpass).

Extended Care Procedures - New Location!!

Extended Care will begin on Tuesday morning. The hours are as follows:

Mornings: 6:30 am - 8 am

Afternoons: 3 pm - 6 pm

The 3 & 4 year olds will be in the small pre-k room on the first floor. Ms. Taylor will be in charge of the little ones. She has been working in childcare for several years and is certified through the Dept of Early Learning to work with this age group. To access the room for drop off/pick up, please enter the main double doors in the front and ring the white door bell to the right side of the second set of double doors.

The kids in Kindergarten through grade 8 will be in Mr. Gabe's room on the second floor. Mr. Ivan will be working with the older students. He comes to us with a wealth of experience teaching Spanish both in Peru and in Washington. He is a native of Peru and will be excellent at helping our JDA students with their Spanish (or English) homework. Please go up the outside stairs in the front of the school and ring the white door bell next to the double doors on the second floor (on the balcony) to access the K - 8 Extended Care.

Uniform Delays!!

It has come to our attention that sweaters are being back-ordered through Dennis and are not available at the store. Please go online to order them and do your best to adhere to the dress code with the items available. It could take 2 - 3 weeks for the sweaters to come in. We will just have to be a little patient with that part of the uniform. Remember to check the link on our website to make sure that your child is in proper uniform this year: http://hrrsjda.org/wordpress/?page_id=361

Communication Envelopes

Our communication envelopes go home weekly, with the youngest student in your household. Please look for this week's envelope (which will go home on Wednesday), as it has a great deal of important information. In an effort to be good stewards of God's creation, we will soon be offering the possibility of opting out of the paper version of our weekly newsletters. If this is something that interests you, please keep an eye out for the opt out form.

Spirit Gear

We are currently reworking our school's logo, so we have not placed the order for Spirit Gear. We are hoping to get things finalized very soon. We will let you know the deadline for Fall Spirit shirts, if you choose to order. For the Fall, we will be allowing students to either wear Holy Rosary spirit shirts (from previous years) or Seahawks shirts, since we are the Hawks! The shirt can be paired with appropriate, loose fitting blue jeans, without rips. Teachers will let students know on Thursdays whether they are able to wear Spirit Gear on Fridays. It is a reward system based on perfect attendance, excellent behavior, and having all work turned in. See your child's teacher for more information on this.

Free/Reduced Breakfast and Lunch - Do You Qualify?

Any child who has received state services such as Basic Food or TANF automatically qualifies for free meals this year. If you qualify based on your income, we will be sending out and processing those applications in early September. Here is the link for more info and the income guidelines to see if you qualify: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2015-03-31/pdf/2015-07358.pdf

Just scroll down to the chart and check for your family size and income (before deductions). Please be aware that, until you are qualified, if you choose to engage in the breakfast/lunch program, you may be billed for the meals. Billings go out the beginning of the following month.

Do You Want to Volunteer?

If you are planning to volunteer around the school or on field trips this year, you will need to attend a Safe Environment class. The Archdiocese of Seattle has changed to Virtus from Setanet. Virtus seems to be more user friendly, will track and notify people when it is time for a renewal, and allows people to do the online renewal every three years instead of annually. Here is info about how to register for upcoming classes, The next class is coming up at St. Charles in Tacoma on Wed, Sept. 9th from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm.

Please register at: http://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/
**Click on register, "Begin the Registration Process", type "Seattle Archdiocese" in the drop down menu, and follow the directions for creating a user name.

Anyone volunteering at the school must have this class. If you need additional info, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Colleen Thomson at casmt@comcast.net,
