Orana Catholic Primary School
Term 3 Week 5
Excellence
Our community values an attitude of enthusiastically applying energy and effort to become better learners. Excellence is evident when:
• we do our best to develop our talents and share them with others
• we have high expectations of what we can achieve
• we take risks and experiment with the way we learn
• we work hard to do our best work
• we celebrate our achievements
Prayer for the Assumption of Mary
Father in heaven,
all creation rightly gives you praise,
for all life and all holiness come from you.
In the plan of your wisdom
she who bore the Christ in her womb
was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven.
May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness
and join in her hymn of endless love and praise.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Dear Parents and Carers,
On Monday, we had our whole school Assumption Mass to celebrate the blessed Mary’s assumption into heaven. Students were engaged and reverent. Thank-you to Father CJ for saying Mass and for all the staff and students that participated and prepared for Mass. Thank-you also to the parents that joined us to celebrate Mass on this holy day of obligation.
On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of presenting for the Women in Catholic Education network on developing leadership potential. This invitation prompted me to reflect on the high quality of staff in our Orana team that lead in the role they are in. Leaders do not need a badge or a formal title to lead in their context. We are blessed at Orana with teachers, education assistants, office and support staff that consistently demonstrate leadership in their roles.
Later this year, Orana is scheduled to have an independent audit to ensure we meet the Non-Government Schools Registration Standards. This process occurs every 5 years. As part of this process, you are invited to give feedback to the reviewer. Please click on the link to the parent survey.
We are holding our annual Open Night next Tuesday 23rd August from 5pm – 7pm. Classrooms and specialist areas of the school will be open. The band will play in the quad from 5.30pm. Don’t forget to visit areas like the Science room, the sensory room, the library and perhaps take a walk down memory lane to visit the early years’ classrooms. There will be a book fair in the library. Proceeds from the sale of books will go towards our library resources. After the great success last year, the Social Justice team will hold a plant sale. Money raised will go towards the homeless food service. The Year 6 Graduation Committee are offering a sausage sizzle; please see the information below and on Seesaw. We hope you can join us.
Next week is also Book Week. Activities will be held in class to encourage students’ love of literature. We will also have our annual Book Week parade on Thursday 25th August at 9.30am. This years’ theme is ‘Dreaming with eyes open’.
Correctly wearing our school uniform is one way that students can demonstrate our school value of Excellence. We encourage students to wear the uniform with pride as they represent themselves, their families and their school. Teachers will be following up with reminders for students that do not follow the uniform guidelines. Please note the following hair and accessory guidelines which I have noticed recently have not been followed by some students.
· Hair that is longer than the collar length needs to be tied back and off the face, using blue or white hair ties or plain clips.
· No extreme hairstyles are permitted; this includes, but is not limited to, mohawks, part or complete head shaving (such as patterns), dyed hair.
· Make-up and nail polish are not acceptable.
· A watch and a plain chain with a small holy symbol is permitted.
· Plain studs or small sleepers are permitted (dangly earrings are not permitted due to safety reasons).
God bless and take care

Altar Servers
Congratulations to Winston Tan in Year 4W on becoming an altar server. Winston served Mass with Fr Thai for the first time at Sts John and Paul Parish last weekend. All students who have made their First Communion are invited to participate in the Parish Altar Serving Program and become involved in this important ministry.
Confirmation Parent / Child Workshop - Year Six
Last night the Year 6s, along with their parents and sponsors, participated in a workshop in preparation for receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. A special part of the evening was when the parents chose a gift of the Holy Spirit that best reflected their child’s qualities. Please pray for these candidates as they continue on their faith journey.
Social Justice Group
Our plant sale is fast approaching. We have a variety of plants and pots which will be on sale at Open Night. We welcome donations right up to the afternoon of the sale. Money raised will be used for the homeless food service which the Orana community support. This is great example of the whole school community coming together to put our School Value of Generosity and our Orana motto To Give is to receive into action. The students have organised fundraising events enabling a group of parents and staff to purchase and serve food to the homeless. A great team effort.
