Superintendents' Newsletter

February 2020

Change Check-Up:

February is a great time to check-in with initiatives, strategies or goals that you may have started in your district this year. It could have been a new Strategic Plan, a new curriculum, a new behavior support system, a literacy initiative or something else!

What were some of the changes that you wanted to see?

How's it going? What is working? What are challenges?

Some reminders about change:

1. All student change (behavior or academic) demands a change in adult behavior

2. For systemic change it needs to happen at all (3) levels:

  • personal level (in their classroom/on their own)-new habits
  • social level (PLC, grade level teams, with coaches) and
  • system level (school-wide/district-wide processes and supports)

3. People mess up. Encourage principals to work with their teachers to come up with a Plan B for when the process isn't followed or an acceptable alternative. Might it look different in different buildings or at different levels?

Curriculum Update:

Special Projects: Monthly Literacy Campaign for Elementary Schools

We are currently working to bring a monthly literacy activity for March, April, May and June to all elementary schools in Genesee County. These activities include a classroom activity, a school-wide activity and a parent/family engagement activity. Themes will vary for each month and can be incorporated into existing school initiatives. Elementary Principals will be given information at the upcoming Elementary Principals' Meeting on Friday, February 21st. We look forward to further increasing our literacy support throughout the county!

Michigan Merit Curriculum Proposed Changes

In your handouts today, you were given a packet outlining the proposed changes for the Michigan Merit Curriculum. Vanita Wilson reviewed the packet with the High School Principal and Counselor groups including discussion on concerns. Curriculum Directors will also discuss at their meeting on Tuesday, February 25th.

Youth Entrepreneurship (YE) Clubs

Participating districts have YE Clubs up and running. This year, Club Advisors are supporting students as they prepare for a 3-minute pitch. The countywide winner will be going to New York to compete with other winners from across the country. We are excited to be able to host this expanded Pitch Competition on May 7th.

Early Literacy Coaching Grant

Thank you to those that attended and began the discussion around the Early Literacy Coach "On Loan" opportunity through the Early Literacy Coach Grant. As we continue to assess our districts needs and existing supports, please continue to talk with staff who may be interested in this opportunity. Stay tuned for updates on this new initiative.

2020 School Wellness Award

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announces the launch of the 2020 School Wellness Award. The award encourages Michigan schools to promote physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco/nicotine-free lifestyles for students and staff. The Michigan School Wellness Award recognizes and applauds schools working to create healthier school environments by establishing School Health Teams, completing the Healthy School Action Tools (HSAT) assessments and action plan, and implementing sustainable policy and environmental changes. All Michigan K-12 public and non-public schools are eligible to apply. The School Wellness Award will recognize schools committed to increasing student achievement with a healthier school community. Award winning schools will be recognized in May 2020 during a ceremony at the state capitol with local legislators.

The MDHHS, in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Education, United Dairy Industry of Michigan, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Action for Healthy Kids invite schools to apply for the award by April 16, 2020.
