Modern Dance was a mix of ballet and musical(theatrical) dance
Modern dance was breaking away from the ballet aspect and bringing in different movements to create its own style of dance. One contributor to the way modern dance is today was Martha Graham, she began teaching and opening up her own company to teach kids today what she knew.

Martha Graham was a very popular modern/contemporary dancer who set the tone of how people dance today.
