Champion High School
Guidelines for Success & Student Handbook Highlights
A note from Dr. Hinojosa
At CHS we are committed to building relationships with all students as well as providing structure for all; two very important pieces to a successful school experience. As we prepare for our school year, we wanted to share highlights from our student handbook, campus guidelines and procedures, safety updates, and answer most frequently asked questions.
We encourage all students and parents to review this document and reach out to us with any questions you may have. We also encourage you to review the Boerne ISD Student Code of Conduct. These topics will be shared with students during our back to school grade level class meetings. Of note this school year is the requirement for all students to display their student ID, a reduction of campus access points during arrival time, and a reminder of appropriate cell phone use in the classroom. We also want to remind students to know the established district dress code that we will follow at CHS.
Thank you for your support in helping us meet these expectations for all students and having a safe and productive school year.
Go Chargers!
Beto Hinojosa, Principal
Boerne Samuel V. Champion High School
Attendance
Please note that regardless of an absence being excused or non-excused, a student is at risk of not receiving credit for a course if they are not in attendance for at least 90% of the days the class is offered (4 absences per class period).
For unexcused absences only, if a student is absent ten (10) or more days or parts of days within a six-month period in the same school year, the student is subject to truancy court. Efforts will be made by your assigned Assistant Principal to provide student attendance recovery opportunities, hold parent conferences, and inform you of specific attendance concerns.
Campus Safety & Security
At CHS we take the safety and security of all very important. Please note the following updates to campus procedures.
Campus access will be limited to the main entry doors, courtyard gates, and middle double doors located in the back of campus. Any other access prior to the start of school for extracurricular purposes will be coordinated by coaches and directors.
Exterior doors and gates may not be propped open at any time during the day.
Doors and Gates should not be open to anyone without a badge.
Doors will remain locked during the day.
All students are required to wear an ID badge.
All BISD employees will wear an employee badge.
All stakeholders are encouraged to report any suspicious activity and use the district's See Something, Say Something tool.
Cell Phones
As a standard practice across our campus, student cell phones should be off / silent and be put away during the instructional school day. At teacher discretion, cell phones are allowed when Chromebooks are not available and their use facilitates teaching and learning. Listening to music is not considered instructional and not allowed. This includes all headphones (wired and wireless). Cell phones are allowed outside of the instructional day before and after the bell as well as during passing periods and lunch.
If after several warnings a student continues to use their phone without permission in a classroom, the teacher will contact parents for support. After this intervention is provided, a disciplinary referral can be written if the problem persists.
Our goal at CHS is to teach our students appropriate digital citizenship, treat and allow them to be self directed by giving them ownership of their actions. It is important students know the when and how to use devices as well as for all to remain engaged and focused in each of their classes.

Dress Code
At Champion High School we value student individuality and encourage self-expression. We also ask that students and our families understand the community adopted norms of an educational setting. Students in Boerne ISD are expected to follow the Boerne ISD approved dress code. Please review specifics below and plan accordingly.

Repeated or severe violations of the dress code will result in disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
Parents are welcome to communicate your preference on whether or not you would like a school issued change of clothes such as CHS spirit gear. if you would not like this to be an option and you be given the opportunity to correct the violation, please let us know.

Please avoid dropping your student off prior to 8:00 AM. Students arriving before school opens may wait in the front courtyard. In the case of rain or cold weather, students arriving before 8:00 will be allowed into the cafeteria.
Parent Drop Off is located on the back of our school, following the parent loop around the staff parking lot. Please see image below.
Bus Drop Off is located be in front loop of campus.
Students in nearby neighborhoods are welcome to walk to campus and bike racks are available on campus by the practice soccer field.
Please be mindful that teachers have morning duty, planning meetings, as well as scheduled tutorials between 8:00 and 8:30 AM. With prior permission or a pass, students may access a teacher's classroom for tutoring, a club meeting, or any extracurricular need. Otherwise, all should remain in the courtyard, front foyer, or cafeteria through the 8:30 AM bell.
Student ID's
Additionally, anytime students are on BISD property—after-school activities, school-sponsored events, etc.— students may be asked by any District Official to produce the student ID to confirm the status as BISD student. The badges may also be used to check out library books and textbooks, to purchase food items in the cafeteria, and to provide easy identification of students in common areas of the school. Students will be required to wear the lanyard and ID at all times unless the lanyard and ID pose a safety concern for a class activity, such as PE or a science lab. Teachers will instruct students to remove their ID if there is a safety concern for the class activity.
