Landmark Elementary School
Newsletter #2 2019/2020
Principal's Message - Mrs. Koop
Thank you to all the parents/guardians that attended parent/teacher conferences. If you were unable to attend and would like to meet with your child's teacher, please contact the school to arrange a meeting time. We value the learning partnership between school and home.
At Landmark Elementary school, we are working towards three school goals throughout the year:
1. Citizenship and Belonging
2. Literacy
3. Numeracy
If you are interested in learning more about our school goals, please see the 2019/2020 Community Priority report.
I want to take this opportunity on behalf of all of the staff at Landmark Elementary to wish everyone a happy holiday season! I hope that the Christmas holidays provide you with the chance to rest and connect with family and friends.

The snow is on the ground, and Christmas is in the air! The students in kindergarten through 3/4G and our Grade 5 and 6 Choir are working hard to begin learning all of the music and speaking parts for the LES Christmas Concert - "The Animals' Christmas Tree."
The performance will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 7 pm at Prairie Rose EM Church. The dress rehearsal will take place at 10:00. All are welcome to attend the rehearsal and evening performance. Get Directions
Students are asked to be at the church at 6:30 where they will meet their homeroom teacher. The front center pew is reserved for parents/guardians to photograph their children as they are performing.
We look forward to sharing our gift of music with you!
Choir Performance
The Grade 5 and 6 Choir will be performing at the Steinbach Credit Union at 11:00 am on Monday, December 9. All are welcome to attend.
Reverse Food Drive
Every year our school is involved in collecting non-perishable food items for our community food banks and Christmas hampers. This is a wonderful opportunity to give back to those in our community and build our citizenship skills.
This year our leadership students will be leading our food drive with a “Reverse Food Drive.” On December 10 students will be able to “purchase” delicious baked goods with non-perishable food items, instead of money. For example, if a student brings in a box of macaroni and cheese, they can use that box to “buy” a yummy treat.
Thank you for your support and help with this initiative. We are excited to be able to give to others this Christmas season.
From the Guidance Area - Mrs. Penner
Hello all Parents & Guardians,
Digital Citizenship is something we take a lot of time to focus on and encourage here at Landmark Elementary. There are multiple ways to encourage your kids to be safe online at home by monitoring their chat groups, social media activity, the apps they are downloading, websites they are visiting, games they are playing, and the amount of time they are spending on their device. Here are a few resources and options for you. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Indoor Recess Policy
Landmark Elementary School will hold indoor recess when the wind chill factor reaches or exceeds -30 Celsius (wind chill or actual). Readings will be obtained from Environment Canada at www.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca. (Kleefeld station).
School Closure Notifications
In rare cases when Hanover School Division cancels classes due to weather and/or road conditions, families are now notified by an automatic phone call system unless you have requested to NOT receive that phone call. School closure information, as well as bus delays, are posted on the HSD website (www.hsd.ca).
In addition, there are radio announcements. It is VERY IMPORTANT that parents/guardians check for school closures. There will be no one at the schools on school closure days. Also, there will NOT be a sign outside the school to let you know that schools are closed. Unfortunately, if students arrive at the school on a school closure day, there will be no way for them to contact parents.
The division will close for cold weather reasons when the temperature at the Environment Canada weather station in Kleefeld at 6:00 AM is at minus 35 degrees Celsius or colder OR is experiencing a wind chill of minus 45 degrees Celsius or colder.

Kindergarten Registration for the 2020-21 School Year
NEW! Online Registration for Kindergarten
Kindergarten Registration for the 2020-21 school year will open on January 6, 2020. The registration process will take place online at HSD.ca. If you do not have access to the Internet, please visit our school (after registration has opened), and we will assist you in completing the registration form on a school computer.
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to register their children as soon as possible upon the opening of registration, or by mid-February at the latest. Registering early will assist our school in preparation and planning for the upcoming school year. Early registration also provides parents/guardians with the opportunity to participate in upcoming 2020-21 orientation activities.
Children must be five years of age on or before December 31, 2020 to be eligible for 2020-21 registration, and are required to attend the school within the catchment area in which they reside.
Please visit the divisional website at HSD.ca for complete details and instructions.
