New Librarian!
Hello everyone! I am Mrs. Jennifer Scheivert, and I'm very excited to be the teacher librarian at Horace Mann Elementary this year. I taught in the elementary classroom for several years before I became a teacher librarian. Before my family moved to the Iowa City area, I taught in Pennsylvania, Thailand, and Japan! For the past 3 years, I have been a part-time teacher librarian at West High School here in Iowa City. I am thrilled to return to my roots in the elementary school this year, as well as continue my time at West High with the "big kids". When I'm not at school, I'm very busy at home with my own family, including my 3 children!
I will sent out monthly updates for the library throughout the year. I am excited to work with all of the students to nurture their love of reading as well as provide them with the information literacy skills needed to navigate all of the information out in the world!

Kindergarten
The kindergarten classes visit the library 2 times each week. One class period each week will focus on library skills. The other class period will include a read-aloud and book check out! During the last few weeks, kindergartners have learned about book care, to help keep our library books safe. We have also learned that books have different parts.
Book checkout day is FRIDAY for both classes.

1st Grade
The 1st grade classes visit the library once a week for library instruction, and then have a separate weekly book check out time. During the last few weeks, 1st graders have learned about book care, to help keep our library books safe. They have also practiced using shelf-markers when they are browsing the books for check outs. We have also learned that books have different parts, including an author and illustrator. We tried to be an author and illustrator by drawing and writing about a favorite animal.

2nd Grade
The 2nd grade class also visits the library once a week for library instruction, and then has a separate weekly book check out time. During the last few weeks, we have reviewed library expectations including book care, using shelf-markers, picking just-right books, and categorization of the everybody books. We also celebrated "Dot Day" around September 15 by reading "The Dot" and discussing how we can make our mark in the world. Something new to the 2nd graders this year is individual student log-in and passwords. Students will log into computers independently, as well as use Google applications for various projects.
