A Message from Mrs. Mulcahy
It is hard to believe the last day of school is tomorrow! This has been a school year for the history books. This year has been unique in so many ways, but yet the opportunities for growth academically, socially and emotionally have exceeded our expectations. Our students have definitely learned what it means to be resilient. They have learned how to overcome so many obstacles and adjust to new circumstances and these will be life skills our students can take with them forever. Thank you to our staff, parents and students for working together to make this year a success. I am amazed by the support we have received from the Hayes Community this year and we couldn’t have made it through this year without you.
As our 5th graders leave us for junior high, I know they will continue to SOAR to great places. They follow great role models that have gone before them and we know they will represent JHE well at their respective junior high schools.
Speaking of leaving, we will be saying goodbye to Mrs. Odom and Mrs. Harwell. They both have been dedicated assistant principals and I have been honored to work with them at Hayes. Mrs. Odom is moving to Sweeny where her husband is the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach for Sweeny ISD. Mrs. Harwell was recently named the new principal of Wilson Elementary- Congratulations! They both will truly be missed by our school community.
And one more good-bye I must mention. Mrs. Karen Gillaspia will be retiring this year. She has dedicated 25 years of her career to Hayes Elementary and has touched the lives of numerous students. We wish Mrs. Gillaspia the very best as she begins her next chapter.
Again, we appreciate the support you have given our campus this year. Our students are successful and continue to SOAR due to the strong partnership between school and home. We feel very fortunate at JHE to have an involved and supportive community. Thank you for sharing your children with us each day, it is truly a privilege.
I hope everyone has a fun, safe, and restful summer and we will see you at “Meet the Teacher” in August. Until then, keep SOARing!

Tips for a Healthy Summer
Summer has finally arrived! It’s time to whip out the BBQs, dig out those swim suits and jet off on holiday for some well-deserved relaxation on the beach.
· Get wet
Summer is the perfect time of year to get wet! Boring runs in the cold wintery weather can be swapped for a summer swim at your local pool or gym. Start by swimming for 10 minutes and increase the time over the following weeks! If swimming laps isn’t your thing, join a water aerobics class or create your own aerobic workout with jumping jacks, marching and jogging in water.
· Always apply sunscreen
It is important to use a sunscreen lotion of at least SPF 30 in order to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. For sensitive skin, a mineral-based sunscreen is best. Don’t sit in the sun in peak hours between 10am and 4pm in order to minimize UV radiation. If you are planning to be out in the sun for a long period of time, reapply sunscreen every two to three hours.
· Drink plenty of water
During the hot summer months, heat and sweat can leave your body dehydrated. A lack of water is harmful to your body and can also make you crave food when you’re not actually hungry. It is important to keep yourself hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water a day. Bored of water? Add some low calorific flavoring to water such as a piece of fruit, or opt for healthy alternatives like green tea or coconut water.
· Eat healthy by the pool
When the sun is beating down, the idea of seeking out the nearest ice cream stand is seriously tempting. Stay strong by being prepared, and pack a cooler full of healthy snacks and juices. Fill your cooler with ice, bottled water, sandwiches, vegetable sticks with hummus, yogurts and endless amounts of fruit.
Enjoy your summer!
