Principal's Message
Dear University Elementary Families,
We have just completed our fourth week of school and we have all settled into our new school year routines. A huge thank you to all the parents who were able to make it to "Back to School Night." If you were unable to attend, we understand. I would like to encourage you to connect with your child's teacher at your first opportunity. We truly are a team when it comes to educating your child. The relationship between parent/guardians is a very important one when it comes to student success at school.
I enjoyed the conversation that was had and getting to know some of our newer families at our 2nd Cup of Coffee this past Friday. 2nd Cup of Coffee is held the first Friday of every month. It is an opportunity to interact with the principal, PTA president and one another to gather information, ask questions and share concerns. One topic that came up that I wanted to share was the definition of what a Walk-a-Thon is and how it works.
The Walk-a-Thon is our major fundraiser at University Elementary. It is organized by our PTA to supplement our school programs and enhance our community by providing opportunities for families and students to build relationships/connections with others at our school. Students ask family members, adult friends, etc. to sponsor them. Sponsors either donate a flat dollar amount or promise to pay based on the number of laps a student walks.
The theme this year is "Take a Walk on the Wild Side! Students may dress up (no masks please) knowing that they will be walking in their attire. I will wear an animal print shirt or socks and maybe a headband with ears. Please do not go out and purchase clothing/costumes for this event.
The day of the Walk-a-Thon students walk laps around our playground and through the walkways while music plays in the background. PTA provides snacks and an obstacle course. Parents and siblings may attend but this is not a requirement of our Walk-a-Thon. Students joyfully walk laps with friends and/or siblings and volunteers keep tallies of how many laps they walk. When the event ends, the students receive a slip that states how many laps they have walked.
The next step is to collect the funds promised by their sponsors and turn the funds in to school by Monday, Sept. 16th to be eligible for Walk-a-Thon prizes. We will announce prize winners at our weekly assembly. Our hope is that this fundraiser allows us to meet our fundraising goal for the year so that it is not necessary to continue to fundraise throughout the year. The goal this year is for every student to work to raise $100 dollars.
Best regards,
Charlotte Straub - Principal
