Heights Happenings
Winston Heights PS - Term 2, Week 8 2022
Principal's Message
Semester 1 Reports
Our teachers are currently working on Semester 1 Reports which will be distributed Thursday 29 June, 2022. Parents/carers then have the opportunity to read over the report prior to parent/teacher conferences which will be held early in Term 3. Conferences provide a valuable platform to share learning goals for your child in partnership with their teacher. In the coming weeks information regarding conferences will be made available to you. I encourage you to book a conference with your child’s teacher, as home and school partnerships are valued and welcomed.
Nyumbar Aboriginal Education Incursion
This week students at WHPS have been learning more about Aboriginal culture through the teachings and activities offered by Nyumbar. All students (K-6) attended a special ‘Sweeping Ceremony’ on Tuesday morning. This was followed by classes attending a lesson to learn about artefacts, languages, way of life, histories and cultures of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Under the guidance of Dez and Isaac from Nyumbar, all students participated in the development of a whole school Aboriginal artwork. These experiences have supported students to recognise the unique and significant place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia – in the past, in the present, and into the future.
Thank you to Mrs Wright for organising a fabulous learning experience for students. Congratulations to our students for displaying our PBL expectations and taking hold of the information presented.
Winter Uniforms and Lost Property
With the weather becoming colder, I would like to encourage all families to stock up on school winter uniform items, including jackets. At Winston Heights PS we hold high expectations with uniform standards, and I thank the community in advance for their support.
It is very important to label any items of the school uniform with your child’s name. Our lost property is currently very full, mostly with student jackets, many of which are not labelled. If your child is missing an item of clothing, please encourage them to check the lost property, located in the school office.
Attendance
Schools across NSW are experiencing larger amounts of absences due to COVID and the flu and Winston Heights is certainly no exemption to this. We thank our community for keeping their children home when they are showing symptoms of cold and flu or COVID. Please remember:
- If your child is confirmed as being positive to COVID, you must notify the school
- Any child experiencing cold or flu symptoms should be kept at home.
- A medical certificate is required for any absence of 3 or more days
- If your child is showing cold or flu symptoms at school, parents will be contacted to pick your child up from school.
Teddy Bears Picnic
Our Kindergarten students recently had an exciting afternoon participating in the Teddy Bears Picnic. Thanks to our Year 6 buddies for organising a fun time on the oval, where students and their teddy bears participated in a range of physical activities. The festivities continued after the games and included a picnic lunch in the Community Corner for Year 6 and Kindergarten. Congratulations to the ES1 teachers and Year 6 buddies for providing this experience for our Kindergarten students, it is one which will certainly be remembered for many years to come.

COREGULATION (Emotional Outbursts)
I recently found a fantastic parenting resource that I would like to share with you. It really resonated with me. Perhaps it will with you too. The topic is COREGULATION, which really just means helping your child to calm down. Here’s how the 6 page resource works: (If you’re in a hurry, just click the link below)
- Advice on how to respond to an outburst without letting your own emotions take over. That can be really hard. Page 1 gives some great tips and helpful words to use.
- Think about what’s going on under the surface. I know that if I feel really emotional, its probably because I’m tired, or overwhelmed, or need someone to listen. Our kids are the same.
- Think about your child's unmet needs which led to the behaviour, and respond to that need.
- Now think about your own unmet needs. Did the child do something to trigger a reaction in you?
- Why did this happen in me (the parent)? Sometimes, there’s a lot going on under the surface for us too, our own struggles and fears for our children.
- Increase your own self-awareness with these reflection questions.
Follow the link below for the helpful and simple COREGULATION reflection activities to help you help your child to cope with their big feelings.
Let me know what you think. Your feedback is really valuable.
Best wishes,
Robyn Bowman (School Chaplain)

I am excited at what new opportunities this will bring for me but sad because after 10 years I am leaving my little Winston Heights community at the end of this term.
How lucky am I to have experienced something that is so hard to say goodbye to.
Goodbyes are never easy but I will leave here grateful to have had the opportunity to support you and your children over the years I have been here at Winston Heights.
As I step forward onto a new path I thank you for your support, friendships and all the laughs along the way that we have shared which truly made Winston Heights such a wonderful place to work.
To all my gorgeous students – you are the hardest to leave. I thank you all for your wonderful stories you have told me, your lovely surprise gifts for us ladies in the office, your beautiful smiles and your infectious giggles.
