Teacher Appreciation Week: May 2nd-6th
To the excellent teaching staff at Prairie View Elementary School,
Happy teacher/staff appreciation week! The Prairie View Community is lucky to have you as part of the team. I have worked in numerous buildings and multiple school districts during my fifteen years working in schools. I have noticed three common attributes teachers and staff have consistently displayed in my many stops: compassion, dedication, and selflessness. Regardless of the situation, the staff at Prairie View epitomizes these excellent characteristics. I want to share some examples of these characteristics that I've seen displayed over the last few eventful school years.
Our school community has seen the Prairie View staff step up time after time. No matter the circumstances faced, our staff always prioritizes students before themselves. I've seen staff help deliver meals to families, drop off student devices on doorsteps, take part in drive-by birthday parties, and spend countless hours emailing and calling families to support our young learners. Our staff has relentlessly demonstrated their compassion for students and families.
Also, during this time, I have seen our teachers and staff evolve in their role as an educator. This evolution caused them to wear multiple hats, including in-person instructors under unique in-person learning constraints, virtual instructors, developers of virtual learning lessons and content, Zoom meeting experts, and tech supporters for students and families, to name a few. Many of these roles pushed staff outside of their comfort zones. Our teachers never hesitated, and their focus was always on helping students succeed. Our staff relentlessly demonstrates dedication no matter the challenges faced.
Lastly, I want to share about the giving nature of our educators. Our staff can be seen regularly giving up their lunchtime to eat with a student or two or help them with a skill they struggle with. Our staff donates coats, hats, gloves, school supplies, and water bottles to those in need and ensures no student ever goes without a snack or lunch. To meet the needs of their students, our staff spends many hours outside of the school day and on weekends to be prepared each week. They've prepared for students on an extended absence who are learning from home, while at the same time prepared for in-person instruction. Our staff's selfless nature is why Prairie View Elementary School is a special place where students come first.
Thank you, Prairie View staff, for showing compassion for students and families, your dedication towards our students, and the selfless nature you model for our students each day. You are appreciated!
-Mr. Ryan

District News
Why was my child able to receive free lunch and breakfast?
Starting in 2019, due to the pandemic, congress, through the USDA, implemented a program, Universal Free Lunch, to provide free breakfast and lunch to students K-12.
The USDA has extended that program through the end of 2022.
At this time we do not know if the program will be extended for next year.
How is the Universal Free Lunch different then the Free and Reduced program for public schools?
The Free and Reduced program is based on income. The Free and Reduced program must be applied for every year. This means a student that qualified for Free and Reduced this year will NOT automatically qualify next year.
If your family qualifies, fees will be reduced or waived in addition to breakfasts and lunches.
The school district cannot approve an application. Only the state can qualify a family.
NOTE: If you qualify for Direct Certification, you do not need to fill out a Free/Reduced form. Direct Certification comes directly from the state. (Medicaid, foster, snap etc.)
Why should I apply for Free and Reduced when I am getting free lunches already and when can I apply?
Getting free breakfasts and lunches is a federal decision and has NO impact on school fees.
The forms that need to be filled out for the 2022-2023 school year have not been released by the State of Illinois. This usually happens in July. We will send a communication to all parents when we know the program is opened by the state.
Approval is not retroactive. For example, if you are approved in December, you will still be responsible for fees incurred from August-December.
What Now?
Look for communication from the Sandwich School District over the summer. After the program opens, we will let you know through an email and placement on our website.

Tie-Dying Field Day Shirts
Thanks to our wonderful PPA we will be having special shirts for field day on May 26th. The Prairie View staff would like to invite volunteers to come to school to help tie-dye shirts to fit our "Learning Colors Your World" theme. Fortunately, we have some experienced tie-dyers that will help spearhead these efforts! We anticipate a lot of interest in helping out and most likely will not be able to accommodate all who are interested. Once this survey closes we will do a random drawing for volunteers. We will also be looking for volunteers who are willing to bring a class set of shirts home to wash multiple times and then return to school. Once this survey closes on Monday, May 9th, we will do a random drawing for volunteers. Please note that we will also be looking for volunteers for field day on May 26th!
-) Tie-dying will take place during the day on Thursday, May 12th
-) All tie-dying will take place outside
-) Volunteers will be treated to a Luigi's pizza lunch!
-) Anyone who volunteers is welcome to bring a shirt from home to tie-dye if they'd like.
