Klaus's Kernels
Here are some FUN FACTS about the colleges that have visited in the past few weeks:
- The Claremont Consortium of Colleges began in the 1900s with the mission of creating 10 schools in 10 decades. Pomona College, founded in 1880's was the 1st and then the Consortium began. They fell short of this goal with only 5 schools. Pitzer College, was founded in the 1960s, is all about Social and Political Movements. They are strong in Social Justice and Environmental Sustainability.
- University of San Francisco hasn't had a football team since the 1950's because back then, their football team went to compete in the Orange Bowl. They were told only their white players could play and that they were to leave out the black players. The entire team stood in solidarity against this discrimination and they didn't play. This is key to the mission and values of USF.
- University of the Pacific (UOP) claims to be the oldest university in the West. They have an amazing music conservatory which is the oldest conservatory west of the Mississippi.
- University of Michigan has the largest football stadium in North America.
- San Jose State University has a professor and coach who is 102 years old. This is Yoshihiro Uchida. He has a hall named after him at SJSU and was on the first U.S. Olympic Judo team in 1964.
