Lake Orion High School
Week #18

Letter from Dr. Haas
Dear LOHS families,
As a district, Lake Orion Community Schools is committed to supporting all students academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally. At LOHS, students will be completing a universal screener through The Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener (SAEBRS). This tool measures common behavioral criteria in Social Behavior, Academic Behavior, and Emotional Behavior. The screener will ask students to rate 19 indicators on a scale of “Never”, “Sometimes”, “Often”, or “Almost Always”. For additional information, please click here. The SAEBRS screener takes approximately ten minutes to complete. Students will complete the survey individually on their laptops two times during the 2022 – 2023 school year.
School staff will analyze the data to identify any trends across the school and grade levels so appropriate support can be developed for students. Strict confidentiality will be maintained with all student data. No student will be required to complete the SAEBRS screener and there is no penalty for students who do not complete the screener.
If you would like to opt your child out of completing the SAEBRS screener for the remainder of the 2022 – 2023 school year, please email Mrs. Mardlin at jessica.mardlin@lok12.org by Friday, January 20, 2023, by 1:00 p.m.
Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to support our students.
Have a great rest of the week.
Dr. Haas

DECA WINS!
Lake Orion DECA had an amazing day at our DECA District 7 Competition on Saturday, January 7th. With over 875 competitors from northern Oakland and Macomb County, Lake Orion had a very successful day.
DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Our LO DECA members competed in role play events that had them study a never seen before case for 10 minutes for an individual event, or 30 minutes for a team event. Then, they compete using the 5 performance indicators listed on the case study along with the listed 21st Century skills. From there, they move on to role play the case out with a judge. This is hard enough to do as an adult and an intense way to build skills as a student. Students also completed an 100 question marketing test in their competitive area to complete their scores.
All students below earned the right to move on to the State Conference in March where they will compete with the best of each district totaling 3,500 high school students. Below is the complete list of winners and their events:

OSTC After School or Saturday Showcases
Students interested in attending OSTC next year, are encouraged to attend a FREE and FUN after school or Saturday Showcase!
OSTC has added dates in January for these Showcases at OSTC-NE! Feel free to attend as many showcases as you'd like and send time doing some of the hands-on activities that are common for that respective program.
If students want to attend multiple showcase, they will complete the registration form multiple times (once for each date). To register for any of the FREE and FUN after school or Saturday Showcases at OSTC-NE, simply click on this link: https://forms.gle/FsGLsBMHCrVMrZ748
The Lake Orion Band Boosters will be partnering with Funds2org and hosting a used shoe donation drive that kicks-off in mid-January. This fundraiser helps offset this unnecessary waste and help keep shoes out of landfills. The gently used shoes that we collect will be consolidated and shipped by Funds2org to developing countries such as Haiti, Cambodia, and Botswana where they will be sold to small business owners for a very low price. In turn, the shoes will be sold by these small business owners to communities in need of proper footwear, at an inexpensive price. This helps create a path out of poverty for these small business owners in countries where there are limited, if any, job opportunities that pay a living wage.

School Dismissal Manager
We have started utilizing School Dismissal Manager (SDM), a program for parents to communicate early student departures. LOHS successfully used the SDM program last year. It is accessible on either computer or smartphone, allowing parents the opportunity to officially submit an early dismissal request without calling the school.
On approximately September 22, you should have received a communication from School Dismissal Manager with additional details. Parents are encouraged to check their designated email accounts. Also, be advised the message might be redirected to your “junk” folders. The welcome email from SDM provides all relevant information necessary to activate and begin using your account.
Family Portal
Just a reminder that Sendmoneytoschool.com has been replaced by lakeorion.familyportal.cloud. Please visit the site to set up a lunch account for your student.
