Happy Black History Month!!!

Welcome to our month-long celebration of every bit of Black Excellence!!! The library will host a fun and interactive research lesson on Black Representation in YA & Children's Literature. See details below. Additionally, there will be a historically Black Sorority/Fraternity step-show and more! There's also a book fair going on this month and several campus celebrations happening in honor of the culturally responsive teachings about this specific American culture. Five to six lessons are embedded in this newsletter. Enjoy!

The Love of Books BOOK FAIR 2022!

Monday, Feb. 14th, 8:30am to Friday, Feb. 18th, 3:30pm

Lost in Love? Needing a Non-edible treat for Valentines Day?? SHOP ONLINE or in the library from 8:30-3:30 daily. We will have a GRANDPARENTS NIGHT on Tuesday 02/15/22 from 5-7 pm. Please check your teacher mailboxes for flyers for the fair. Any extras you can leave in my mailbox. The Friday before the fair begins, we will have a quick walk through for classes. When I say quick, I do mean it: single file, masked up, no touching, make the loop through the fair, gather ideas for what to purchase and then head out. Black Representation in YA & Children's Literature

All month classes will be in the library for cultural connections & conversation regarding Black Literature. Students will analyze illustrations & literary text. After compiling their 4Cs of complex text, they'll connect it to present day headlines.

World Book Online Black History Month Webquest

The Webquests are designed to get your students learning about these influential people & their roles in our history. Activities include finding facts, vocabulary, interpreting images, understanding videos, artistic creations, or playing games.

Dessau Quilting Bee

Tuesday, Feb. 22nd, 3:45-5:15pm

12900 Dessau Road

Austin, TX

Join us in the library after school to create a Dessau Unity Quilt for Black History Month. Mrs. Vickie West (professional quilter & PfISD/DMS beloved tutor) will instruct us on the beginning stitches of creating a quilt, as well as some historical context to quilting within the African American culture.

BHM Library Festivities

Monday (02/21/22) Black Mental Health: How to Demystify Stereotypes & Supportive Ways for Asking for Help in Trying Moments. Praise Dances courtesy of the Dance Team during ALL LUNCHES in the cafeteria.

Tuesday (02/22/22) History & Impact of Black Culture: From Continent to Content

Dessau MS Quilting Bee AFTER SCHOOL 3:45-5:15. We will stitch together a "Dessau Unity Quilt" with our students/faculty after being taught by master quilter, Vickie West.

Wednesday (02/23/22) Current Black Politics & the African American Vote

Bulletin Board Display outside the library in honor of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.

Thursday (02/24/22) Loving the Black Family

The DMS STEM Cooking Club will serve traditional Black foods for fellowship and community.

Friday (02/25/22) Black Music, Artistry & Historically Black Organizations

Historically Black Sororities & Fraternities will present a brief history and dance performance during ALL LUNCHES.

Dessau MS Library

The library is open daily from 8:00am-3:30pm. I take "C" lunch from 12:25-12:55, closing briefly for nourishment. Reserving the library can be made here. Please send students with a legitimate pass on their agenda from their classroom instructor (name, date/time of student & staff) and reason for visit.

February Closure Dates for the DMS library: Feb. 7-11. During Book Fair Week, the library will only be open BEFORE/AFTER school for check-out purposes.
