Peek at the Week

Mrs. Bennett's First Grade News, Week 12, Nov. 7-11

A Note From the Teacher

Wow! I love teaching this age because the progress is so amazing. This week we discussed what we "wonder" about voting. We have been busy researching and answering all of our questions. We began our campaigns today by making posters for Grace, Teacher or Duck and discussing issues they may tackle such as more field trips or more iPads in schools. Next week, we will begin a corn inquiry unit. We will observe different types of corn and kernels. We will estimate how many kernels are on one corn cob. We will learn how to read labels on foods this week and look for things that have corn. Your child may bring in a food label to share with the class anytime in the next two weeks. Next week, we will continue to learn strategies for reading with fluency and accuracy in order to understand what we read. We will be revising and editing our writing with a partner and prepare for publication. We will discuss proper nouns, commas, and the suffixes -s, -es, -ed, and-ing. In math we will continue our study of place values with numbers 100-120.

Spelling

***New Spelling Homework: A word sort will be sent home each Monday. This is the new leveled spelling program I shared during parent conferences. Each child will be on his/her individual spelling level. Please have your child cut out and sort the words and pictures. It is good to do a quick sort of words and pictures each day. We will be doing the same sort in class each Monday so these are yours to keep. Your child will work on the spelling skill sent home all week and then tested on Friday. For example: digraph 'sh' words. If they can spell one 'sh' word, they should be able to spell others. Brainstorm as many as possible such as ship, shop, fish, cash, shock, shin, push. A spelling choice board will be sent home to give you ideas for practicing the words. Your child does not have to turn in this homework.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Optional Challenge Words (test on November 11, 2016)

vote, leader, state, nation, choice, decision, public official
