Last Week of the 2nd Trimester
I hope you are well. I had the privilege to travel to Chicago to attend the ASCD National Conference. I learned a lot. I always chuckle at how administrators go to conferences and then come back to school all charged up and ready to make vast sweeping changes to their school. Well, I can assure you that won't happen. However, I did learn a great many things and some of those learnings I am posting below. This way you might be able to appreciate some of what I am sharing and then you won't have to hear me belabor the points ad naseum.
Why no broad sweeping changes? Well, thanks for asking. We are on the right track. We are looking at AVID Schoolwide with curriculum council and focusing on how we can support the Whole Child. These two focus areas and a deep level of commitment to professional collaboration with our departments will be the over riding focus this year, and the next, and the next. Our focus is strong yet simple. We are just getting started and we will keep getting better.
I hope your weekend was enjoyable.
In The Know
Things to Consider:
Three questions every great educator should ask at the beginning of each school year...
1. Who am I? Share this with students.
2. Who are they (students)?
3. Who are WE?! Think of your classroom community.
The learning process is a team effort.
As soon as we put a label on a kid, we cut our goals for them in half. - Ron Clark
If we have to walk down the hallway we should seek opportunities to stop and talk to students. Smile. They love it.
Your studnets must see themselves in your curriculum. - Ron Clark
The best teachers know the backgrounds of our students better than anybody and never use it as an excuse. - Todd Whitaker
The difference between a good teacher and a great teacher is 'intentionality'. A great classroom doesn't happen by mistake. - Dwayne Reed
When these kids are difficult, when these kids are challenging - THAT'S when you have the biggest impact! - Ron Clark
As a teacher analogy, are you bread (plain/boring), or pizza (zesty, exciting)?
Grades are not compensation. Grades are communication: They are an accurate report of what happened. - Rick Wormeli
If you redo your drivers license test, do you get half credit? Why would we give half credit for redos? - Rick Wormeli
In a community, first you have to love yourself because if you don't love yourself, you can't love anybody else. - Patrick Nolan (Age 4)
