450-Peg Legs

In 450 the peg leg and crutches were invented. They were the first type of prosthetics. They were made up of wood and leather materials. This was the very first type of prosthetics, which helped push it in the right direction.

1508- Advanced hands

In 1508 a scientist named Gotz Von Berlichingen made the first pair of advanced iron hands.

1529- Artificial Leg

In 1529 the first artificial leg with a movable knee joint was created by Ambroise Pare. This allowed the user to bend there knee for things like siting or working. This made it much more easier and convenient for them.

1629- Prosthetic leg

In 1629 a man named Pieter Verduyn made the first prosthetic leg with a non-locking knee. This was important because it made walking and running easier for the user.

1858-First Copper/Wooden Leg Discovered

Archaeologists uncover the first copper and wooden leg in Capri, Italy thought to have come from around 300 B.C. This was significant because it helped shape prosthetics in the future, and showed how advanced they were back then.

1861-Civil War Promotes Changes

The U.S. government starts paying for war veterans that lost limbs. This is important because back than prosthetics weren't cheep and they were harder to get.

1912-Aluminum Leg

In 1912 Gustav Hermann creates the first aluminum leg. This is important because it is much lighter and easier to carry for travels. Plus it is much more comfortable.

1950-Prosthetics for the Population

Electrical prosthetics devices are introduced and are available for general use.

1975-New and Improved

Ysidro Martinez makes and improved below-knee prosthesis. This is significant because this improved version is much easier and more functional prosthetic for handicapped people to use and enjoy.

2000-Modern Development

Prosthetics now use plastic and fiber glass, and some are controlled by thoughts. Making them more comfortable, enjoyable, and easier to use. With their soft light weight material it makes it much more comfortable.
