Go online to make pledge donations at http://ehg.3dcartstores.com/. Cash or check donations are also accepted. (checks payable to E.H. Greene PTO).

We also still need volunteers for Thursday to help make Walkathon a success. Consider helping as a monitor or counter. You can walk with your child too! Sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4fa4ad2baaff2-walkathon/

The PTO will be providing snacks during the walk-a-thon for all of the students. They will be serving rice krispie treats, pre-packaged (not homemade), and the allergen and nutrition info can be found at: www.kelloggs.com/en_US/products/kellogg-s-rice-krispies-treats-original-bars-product.html. Please check the information and discuss it with your student, especially if s/he has any special dietary needs. Students are welcome to bring their own snack as well

A Message from the Principal

In the coming weeks we will be meeting with all students to follow up on the expectations we have for them. This information was first shared with them in their homerooms and the conversation continued through our video announcements.

One of the topics we will discuss in these meetings is bullying. I know this is an important topic for schools. Parents send their children to us and we have the responsibility to ensure that they are safe and treated with respect. This is something I take very seriously and in my past position managed for the entire school district.

Our community can help with this! Talk to your students. One tool I have found that works is to look for different ways to ask with saying, "How was school today?" Here is a site that provides 25 of these types of questions. I know #12 led to an interesting discussion about a classmate of my daughter.

The one thing we will stress to our students is they need to report behavior that they are uncomfortable with. We will help this conversation by outlining what is and is not bullying. I have always told students to report this to an adult they trust. It means a lot to me when students say I am that person, but realistically I know there is a special bond between children and their parents. If your child reports this to you, please call the school so we can follow up! The District website has additional ways to report this behavior as well as some additional information. Thank you for your help with this!

With the Warmest Regards,

PTO MEMBERSHIP AND DIRECTORY UPDATE

Thank you so much to all those who have joined the PTO this year! Your $10 contribution supports so many important programs for our kids and guarantees you a copy of our Student Directory which you can expect to receive in early October.

Haven’t joined the PTO yet? Remember, joining the PTO does not obligate you to serve on any committees or volunteer any of your time or attend any meetings. That is all completely voluntary! PTO Membership is available to everyone for just $10 and is a great way of showing that you support the work that the PTO does for your students and your school. And plus, you get that handy Student Directory! Why not join the PTO online right now! (http://ehg.3dcartstores.com). Can’t remember whether or not you joined, or have other PTO Membership questions? Check with Karen Ronnigen (karenronningen@ymail.com).

Don’t forget to update your Student Directory listing. Last week, your child brought home a form displaying the information that will be printed for your student in the Directory. The deadline for updating your listing is TODAY (Friday, September 16). If you still need to make changes, you may send your form into school on Monday, or make changes to your directory listing online (http://bit.ly/ehg1617). If you didn’t receive a form, or want to email your changes directly, or have other Directory related questions, please email Wendy Andersen (wendy@shineyoga.com).

Box Tops for Education

Please begin clipping and mark your calendars for our fall Box Tops collection, October 3 - 7. The wing in each grade that collects the most box tops will receive an extra recess! Students should please turn Box Tops in to their homeroom teacher. For more information including a list of participating products, visit www.boxtops4education.com.

Digital Citizenship for Parents

Greene Intermediate School is taking the digital citizenship role very seriously. Managing cyber bullying, privacy, safety, and other digital dilemmas are a real challenge. But, the Greene School staff also sees that technology provides incredible opportunities for students to learn, connect, create, and collaborate in ways never before imagined. In order to create a safe, responsible, positive school culture, your student’s homeroom teacher has been teaching modules on digital life, digital footprint, and cyber safety. Every other week, a family tip sheet will be posted in the newsletter. It will offer talking points, family challenges, and suggestions for device use at home.

5th - Talking Safely Online

6th - Digital Life 101

Vision Screening Training for Volunteers

Sycamore is offering a training by the Ohio Department of Health in vision screening at Montgomery Elementary, Oct. 6th, 9-12. The ODH is considering changes in the requirements for volunteers helping with screenings, and this training would fulfill these new requirements. While they are not in place for 2016-17, this information is valuable for anyone who wants to volunteer and explains how to conduct successful vision testing. We appreciate parent volunteers helping our schools with screenings, which are an important public health service for our community! If you are interested in attending the training, please contact Susan Linton at lintons@sycamoreschools.org

Signups for vision will be coming later in fall. If you are interested in volunteering for vision screens please contact Vanessa Shafer vdwilhelmus@yahoo.com
