Tumuaki Message
Kia ora Parents and Whānau,
It has been a busy couple of weeks with many opportunities for our learners to participate in, both within our school programme and the wider educational sector. At the end of this term Mid Year Reports will be shared electronically to all parents and whānau. Our next opportunity to meet with you will be at Learner Led Conversations on August 4th.
Over the next four weeks we will host at our school a Fono Meeting, a NetSafe Parent Workshop, Matariki Celebrations and a Resilience Evening. These sessions are all designed to keep you informed of the focus that we have for our learners alongside tips and tricks for supporting at home.
Please see below a Review of the recent professional learning that all of our local Kahui Ako teachers participated in this month. COLAB Review - June 2021.
You may also be interested in having input into the decisions around future zoning for all schools here. The proposed changes will affect Out of Zone Enrolments for all schools in Years 1-13. This survey closes on Wednesday 16th June.
Ngā mihi nui,
Wendy

Ako Update
PYP
TNIS learners showed that they were truly knowledgeable when showcasing their new learning for "How the World Works". Each team had a slightly different end focus, but all had an emphasis on energy and forces, and the scientific process. We saw machines being created, videos about creating different types of energy, and a lot of frustrated fun being had! The unit has produced some true inquiring, with a focus on creating questions that lead to strong research. Prior knowledge has been combined with new knowledge to gain a greater understanding of the wider world.
We have now moved into "How We Express Ourselves", with a focus on Visual Art, Drama, Dance, and Music, and how these are perceived by different groups and individuals. This unit of inquiry has had large amounts of learner input to direct the content that we teach, and the direction that the learners would like this to go in. This week has seen all teams diving into different hands-on "Arts" experiences, and will continue to be a unit of inquiry with lots of practical opportunities.

Resilience: Presentation 1
Wednesday 7th July 2021, 6.30-7.30
Takapuna Normal Intermediate Auditorium
Seminar: Understanding and Building Resilience in our young people.
Our current social landscape presents many challenges for our children, some of which involve technologies and world events that are unprecedented or unfamiliar.
Resilience as a mind-set and character trait is the strongest predictor of success for young people aiming to navigate these challenges.
In this seminar we will explore:
What exactly is a resilient mind-set?
How can we nurture it within ourselves and our children?
What are the factors that can undermine this process?
Can we form a set of principles around resilience and mental health similar to healthy eating/exercising strategies that benefit our physical health?
Presenter: John Meeske MSc Psychology (Hons)
John has worked in the area of mental health for over 20 years, advising people on a diverse range of mental/emotional issues. His passion is to encourage families to foster resilience as early as possible to guard against issues such as anxiety and depression in the future.
- Learners who have signed up for competitive Cross Country will go to Onepoto Domain on buses.
- The rest of the school will remain at school for a fun run, led by teachers.
- Competitive runners need to come to school in uniform and then get changed into P.E gear after morning tea.
- Competitive runners must bring water and running shoes. Asthmatics must bring their medication with them.
- Fun Runners are encouraged to bring house colours to get changed into. House colour costumes are welcome.

Guitar Lessons starting Term 3 - Dave Gatman
Hi there! I have taught Guitar to kids in schools for over 15 years. I love working with kids and inspiring the next generation of musicians. I like to make my lessons as positive and fun as possible, teaching a range of songs from traditional folk/blues to the current pop and rock tunes.
I've played the guitar in a large variety of settings, and I'm currently in a covers band playing at weddings, bars and parties.
Lessons are in groups of up to 4 at a time, and cost $20.00 plus gst, for half an hour.
Individual lessons are offered if I feel like the student will benefit from them, and if I have space. These cost $35.00 plus GST per half hour.
Lessons are on Wednesday mornings at TNIS as well.
Feel free to contact me - dave.gatman@musiqhub.co.nz. Or text/call on 021 2221456.
Thanks,
Dave
