News from Our 6th Grade
ELA
In ELA, the sixth graders have recently finished reading the novel, “Freak the Mighty.” Students completed a book report on the novel using Google Slides in the computer lab. In the report, students had the opportunity to summarize the novel, create a picture collage, and write the first chapter to the second book. After the reports were completed, students completed a Gallery Walk and got to look at various reports by their peers.
On Friday, October 20th, students participated in a Reading Marathon. The students completed 8 different rounds during the marathon. Each round lasted 10 minutes and students either read their books or completed an activity related to their books during each round. The pictures below show students during our Reading Marathon!
Students are now learning about making inferences based on what they see or read in a passage. Currently, we are reading the book, “The Mysteries of Harris Burdick,” where students made various inferences on the mysterious images Harris Burdick created. Then, students will have the opportunity to write a mystery based off of the images they see in the book.
After Thanksgiving break, we will be reading our next class novel. Students will either read, “Charlotte’s Web,” or “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.” We will be discussing themes in the book, how characters change throughout the novel and use the RACES strategy to write our responses. Students will have the opportunity to watch the movie version of the book before going on winter break! ~Submitted by Mrs. Bute
Mathematics
In math, the sixth graders just finished up a unit on number sense. We were able to do a lot of creative activities to allow the students to discover math in different ways. We worked outside on the playground and the students created coordinate planes. We used decks of cards to help us understand how to work with absolute value and integers. In general, students are learning how to start noticing things in general about math and the world around that is related to math. We are currently starting to work on expressions and equations. They are learning how to write, simplify and solve expressions and equations. We are working on this through algebraically and through modeling. The students are working hard in math class and they are really stepping out of their comfort zone to be creative.
Every Monday the students are participating in DARE class with Deputy Mitch. They have completed 7 lessons so far this year. They will be expected to complete a 5 paragraph essay on the course in order to graduate on November 20th. Parents will be invited to the graduation that afternoon. The students have been working hard in DARE and they are learning a lot with Deputy Mitch in the classroom. They are learning about how to make safe and responsible choices in their lives. ~Submitted by Mrs. Blankenship
Science
In Science, we continue with the “digging” theme as we learn about rocks and minerals. The students will be learning how minerals form and their unique purposes. We will even put on our scientist hat and try to identify some rock and mineral samples in the classroom. We will be doing lots of activities in which we will get to investigate the different types of rocks and minerals found in our world. ~Submitted by Mrs. Kluge
Social Studies
Multimedia
Students in Mrs. Oney’s Multimedia 6th grade classes are learning about Veterans Day and connecting to it on a personal level. To honor our nation’s veterans, students in Mrs. Oney’s classes have interviewed a veteran of their choice. After completing the interview, students typed their information into a Google Slideshow that also contains pertinent information relating to Veterans Day. Students printed their Veteran slide to display at the upcoming Veterans Day program, which will be held at the high school on Friday, November 10th. ~Submitted by Mrs. Oney
Art
Students in Mrs. Bush’s art class are exploring Ancient Egyptian art and making an interdisciplinary connection with social studies, since they are also learning about the Egyptians with Mrs. Kluge. We began creating pharaoh masks out of papier mâché. These masks are “funeral masks,” or masks that would normally be seen on a pharaoh’s sarcophagus.
I received a scholarship from the Cleveland Museum of Art for their Art to Go program. Sixth grade students will participate in the Art to Go program on Monday, November 6, 2017. The Cleveland Museum of Art will be bringing approximately seven to nine Ancient Egyptian artifacts from their collection. The artworks in the collection are real and are not reproductions! A presenter will discuss the artworks from the collection by providing the history and purpose of those artifacts, as well as allow students to hold and examine the objects (wearing gloves, of course). One of the artworks dates back to 2550 B.C.! This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience since it is frowned upon to touch artworks in an art museum.
I am excited to bring the Art to Go program to South Central and I hope students are looking forward to this unique experience! If you are interested in learning more about the Art to Go program, or what will be featured in the “Let’s Discover Egypt” collection, please check out the link provided to see what your child will be experiencing. The Cleveland Museum of Art provides a great introduction to the history, pictures, vocabulary words, and questions to think about. Submitted by Mrs. Bush
