GES Mustang Bulletin
Issue 36: May 22nd, 2020
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
I cannot thank you enough for your patience, perseverance, and support through the past ten weeks of remote learning. Looking back, the challenges and obstacles we have overcome together are staggering. I feel so fortunate to work with a staff of educators and a community of families who have faced adversity head-on and emerged stronger and wiser. This has been a shared success we can all be very proud of.
Please be sure to fill out the personal item pick-up form. I will send one more reminder about technology drop-off and item pick-up before we start collecting devices on Tuesday, May 26th. Please look for that reminder.
Finally, I want to express my humble gratitude for welcoming me to the GES and Lake Community six years ago. It has been an honor to serve your children in this role of principal and I am grateful for your well wishes and support. My heart is heavy knowing that I won't be seeing your children daily next year, though I am excited that I will have the opportunity to work with former students at Gunnison High School. I wish you all the very best this summer and next school year. My father's favorite quotation comes from Hall of Fame Baseball Player Jackie Robinson, who said, "A life is not important except in the impact it has on others." I can say with unwavering confidence that your children have all impacted my life. I hope that I have had an impact on theirs. Stay well.
Happy Final Friday! Thank you to all of you who made it out to the parade yesterday! It was so great to see so many smiling faces and give so many air hugs! I came across an article that considered a trauma informed approach to returning to school and I thought it had some great tips I would share with you all! Try using language like “when you go back” instead of “if you go back” I have been encouraging kids to use their growth mindset by saying “we can’t go back YET!” Talk to your kids about what they are feeling and help them name those emotions and then validate those feelings. Reassure them that we all love them so much that we will do what is best to keep everyone safe. And remember as caregivers you should try to take time to fill your own cup! Your well being is very important too! We have come this far and our great community can do great things, we are Gunnison strong! I’ll see you around this Summer!
