Weekly update for the Meadows Elementary School community

Week 4 of Distance Learning 5/3

Good Evening Meadows Families,

We miss our Meadows students and families so very much! Please see the video that we made for you edited by Mrs. Dobry and contributions from all of our 31 teachers and 16 staff members.

I can't believe that we are entering our 4th week of distance learning. Our parents and students show more confidence in navigating the Google Classroom platform. You're doing a great job continuing to answer the attendance question daily and turning in class assignments.

This week is a special week because we honor our teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week at Meadows. We are so grateful for our teachers. See the flyer below for details on how you can help and show your teacher your appreciation.

We look forward to seeing you on Monday and Tuesday for the workbook and consumables pick up through our valet line. See details in the email sent last week.

Thank you to everyone who joined me for "Coffee with the Principal". Great questions and conversation. One of the most important questions that came up was about 6th grade promotion. We are in discussion with our teachers to plan a special event for them. More details will be shared in the next few weeks.

Be safe. Be well.

We are ready! Teachers and staff worked hard on Friday to organize and get ready for Monday. Team Meadows will do the best that we can to help our students! Please see the email we sent on Thursday for details about the pick up. Please note that this is not the day that we will be able to locate and distribute personal belongings. However, we WILL make a plan for this as stay at home restrictions change. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Special NSD Board Study Session on Safety and Security

On February 4th, the Newhall School District Governing Board held a Special Board Study Session to discuss safety and security issues and concerns throughout the District. We invited multiple subject matter experts to share their insight on various aspects of safety and security the District should be considering as we work to develop a more comprehensive approach to student and staff safety and security. Based on the presentations, discussions, and feedback, a list of potential safety and security considerations emerged.

The District is seeking your feedback on the list of considerations which fell into three major categories: (1) Social and Emotional Supports, (2) District Policies and Procedures, and (3) Internal/External Site Needs. Under each of these three categories, we are asking you to select one top choice, a second choice, and then a third choice. The District will use this feedback to develop a Strategic Safety Master Plan which will include short and long term goals.

We appreciate you taking time to help shape how the Newhall School District will continue to improve safety and security for our students and staff. Our goal is to complete the survey by May 15th.

4th Grade Nature Mandala Art Projects

A Mandala is a spiritual symbol representing the universe. The circular designs symbolize the idea that life is never ending and everything in life is connected.

1.Take a walk around your neighborhood or just take a walk through your backyard. Collect interesting leaves, flowers (don’t pick without permission), pebbles, or anything else you can find that strikes your interest.

2. On a heavy duty paper plate, piece of cardboard, or any other stiff paper arrange your things in some kind of circle. Be as creative as you’d like.

3. Glue everything down.

Now you have your very own Mandala

Science Fair Submissions and Deadlines

Hello Meadows Students and Families!

We hope you are all doing well at this time. The PTSA Meadows Science Fair will still be happening for our up and coming Meadows' scientists with a different culmination as in the years past. The format for submitting your projects will be digital (document, slides, etc.). Please note that we have extended the science fair project submission deadline from Thursday, April 23rd, 2020 to Friday, May 8, 2020. Please refer to the attached Science Fair Guidelines when completing your projects. Due to Covid-19 guidelines, we will only be taking digital submissions. If you completed your project on the poster, you can use a cell phone to upload image(s) or record a video of your project or invention. You can upload all images to a Google Slide Show presentation and submit to the Science Fair Google Classroom.

From Mrs. Yap who oversees the Science Fair. "We test drove the input with her son. You can download and then place it into the folders. As for using google slides, you can insert pictures from the google drive but could not insert videos into the slide show. As a test, her son submitted three files and they all work!

1) Google Slide for Science Fair Project

2) A Short test video (15 sec)

3) A reading video (over a minute long) Note: Needed to use the cloud or outside drive for this big file."

Use the link below for your online digital submission for your file(s). If you need help with submissions, please reach out and email us. jfine@newhallsd.com We can help.

Free Meals for Kids Under the Age of 18

This is just a reminder for those families who are taking advantage of the school meal programs at McGrath, Newhall, Peachland, and Wiley Canyon: Please make sure you are wearing a facial mask as you drive through the meal service lines. It is the same expectation as if you were going to a grocery store. Thank you for helping protect yourself and our support staff. Stay Safe!
