December will be a fast month in the HEMS library. Here's a glimpse of what we'll be focusing on in the three short weeks of this month!!
The preschool classes will visit during the first week of the month to hear If You Give A Mouse a Cookie in celebration of their theme of smells and cookies. We'll also enjoy some chocolate chip cookies after our story time.
K-3 students have been focused on using their library tools (five finger rule, book blurbs, knowledge of self) to select books that are "just right" for them. We will enjoy several award books this month starting with Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet (the 2013 Sibert Award Winner for Informational Books for Children) which is the story of Tony Sarg who invented the balloons that have become the trademark of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. We will follow that with two Missouri Show Me Reader Award Nominees: Some Cat by Mary Casanova and The House on Dirty Third Street by Jo S. Kittinger. Both of these selections focus on the theme of helping others and giving - which seem fitting for this month of celebration.
Grades 4-8 will also focus on Missouri Award books in December. Book talks, digital resources, and guidelines for participation and voting for the 2015 Mark Twain and Truman Award Nominees will be shared.
