After School Program Update
Great news!
MLA's After School Program will continue to offer the enrichment classes that our students love so much (via Zoom). Ballet Folklorico! Visual Art! Capoeira, and more! In addition to these enrichment opportunities, LoveLearnSuccess will also begin to offer Spanish support in small groups. We are still working out the details with LoveLearnSuccess, but we are tentatively planning on the following skeletal schedule for the day once full-day distance learning begins (union bargaining agreement pending):
Elementary School:
- 8:30-2pm: Core Day Learning Window (whole group and small group learning experiences would be scheduled during this time, thought not for the entire time)
- 2pm-4pm: After School Learning Window
Middle School:
- 9am-3pm: Core Day Learning Window (whole group and small group learning experiences would be scheduled during this time, though not for the entire time)
- 3pm-5pm: After School Learning Window
- Please see the After School Update from MLA's After School Program partner, LoveLearnSuccess
- Visit the LLS Website to register
- Please email Armando Garcia with your questions: armando@lovelearnsuccess.org
Pod Requests
A few families have reached out to me (Bri) asking if MLA will be coordinating small learning pods to support with distance learning. Other families have reached out with specific requests for their child to be placed in the same classroom as another student for ease of childcare. I have been heartened to see that many MLA families have been publicly grappling with the question of how to ensure ALL of our students at MLA remain safely connected to each other during this challenging time, rather than support the needs of a privileged few. This stance is in alignment with our core values, and I appreciate the family leaders who are taking this equity stance and supporting each other to make sense of this challenge.
Our Response:
In solidarity with 13 other Oakland Principals, we will be following the policy outlined in this joint letter. While we understand and empathize with how challenging it is to support your child's learning while working from home, we hope you will remain engaged as solution-oriented and equity-based leaders who are committed to social justice during this time. I would like to offer this article to the community and encourage you to ask yourself the questions listed as you organize your home learning setup this fall.
Our Hope:
We are hopeful that by launching Room Parents early this year, parents will be able to thoughtfully and intentionally identify ways to ensure ALL of the students in your child's class can remain connected to each other and make great progress as learners this year.
Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership.
