Gayman Goes Healthy!
Good nutrition is a bedrock of lifelong health, wellness, productivity, and happiness. Therefore the Pennsylvania Department of Education has adopted the Nutrition Standards for Competitive Foods in Pennsylvania Schools. These standards seek to promote the provision of healthy eating options along with an emphasis on nutritional education.
Several school-wide factors prompt Gayman to adopt new guidelines regarding food treats in classrooms. These factors include:
- The number of classrooms with student allergies is wide-spread.
- The dietary restrictions of several children demand that we exercise prudence.
- The instructional implications of time taken to share and consume birthday treats are significant.
What does this mean to the Central Bucks School District and specifically to Gayman Elementary School?
Beginning this year, we will emphasize the following health & wellness guidelines:
1. The practice of bringing in birthday treats is now discontinued.
2. Classrooms will refrain from using food as a reward, unless the reward is an activity that promotes a positive nutritional message.
3. Classroom parties will offer a balanced array of items from which the children can choose. Healthy options must be included on the menu.
If you feel the need to treat your child to something special at school on his or her special day, here are some suggestions: Hand out small tokens such as pencils, stickers, bookmarks or erasers. Purchase one of our library books and dedicate it to your child. Send in a book for the class library. Let your child bring in photos of himself/herself over the years.
We will still have classroom parties and celebrations throughout the year. Treats may be brought in for these special events as long as there are also healthy food options for children to choose. With the support of parents, educators and community members, Gayman Elementary School and the Central Bucks School District will promote balanced eating habits, exercise, and mental wellness in order to cultivate happy, healthy children and future adults.
