Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori Community,
This week we wrapped up our iReady testing and celebrated a year well lived with our annual talent show. The talent was phenomenal, we had singers, pianists, violinists, dramatic readers, gymnasts, a rubiks cube expert and dancers! The baskets were beautiful and bountiful. The enchilada dinner delicious. Thank you all for supporting this lively celebration with your donations and attendance.
Herrera Dual Language and Fine Arts School located at 1350 S 11th St, Phoenix will be offering some wonderful morning summer school programs for our district 5th-8th grade students. Students in 5th-8th grade may attend the Summer Academy where they may attend hip hop, ballet folklorico, culinary arts, mariachi, and an indigenous studies course. See attached document for more information. To register click here: Herrrera Summer Arts Academy
(CASA) the College and Career Success Academy is also back this summer for our incoming 7th and 8th graders at Herrera. It will run from June 6th-23rd from 8:30 to 11:30. See attached document for more information and registration. To register click here: CASA
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Finding Mental Health Support over the Summer
With summer break around the corner, here are some tips on how to get mental health help for your child if needed. The last 2 years have been very stressful and world events continue to impact our community. Kids are anxious, struggling with academics and peer relationships, social media and stressors in the home.
Here are some signs to watch for:
- Dramatic changes in sleeping and eating habits
- Feeling depressed, sad or hopeless for more than 2 weeks
- Extreme mood swings
- Isolating or withdrawing from friends, family or usual social activities
- Drastic changes in usual behaviors
- Self-destructive behavior (cutting, drinking, experimenting with drugs, excessive risk-taking)
- Talking about death, wanting to die or feelings of falling apart
As a parent, trust your gut instinct.
How to find a therapist
- Ask your child’s pediatrician for a referral
- Call your health insurance provider for a list of providers in your network
- Teens who need to talk about their problems right away can call Teen Lifeline 24/7 at ( 602)248-TEEN (8336) or (800)248-TEEN
- Ask friends for referrals
I hope these tips help. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Summer Homework
We shared our summer homework folders and learning expectations at the last Site Council meeting. The material provides an opportunity to offer structure and systems for our children during the summer. Please consider the suggestions and ideas provided in the folders to incorporate into your child’s daily routine as their “homework.”
Your child should access the folder for the grade level that they will be entering this fall. Additionally, your child’s teacher may contact you with specific opportunities based on your child’s individual needs.
Here is the link to the folders:

Garden Update
Greetings!
We hosted our last market table of the year last Wednesday. Big thanks to all the students that helped harvest vegetables and assemble bouquets. We were able to raise a little more money for the library and that’s dandy. We will bring back the market tables in the fall when things cool down.
All our chicks are sold! Big thanks to all the elementary and primary classrooms that took care of incubators and chicks. The students really enjoyed hatching chicks and caring for them. We will bring back our chick-hatching program next year. If you are still interested in acquiring some chicks, then I can get you some from Maya’s Farm. Let me know.
The infamous Bugs was back on campus again this week. The students love that mutt. He was greeted with lots of hugs, kisses, good boi pets and compliments. My favorite compliment came from Charlie, who said, “He smells like rainbows!” I agree Charlie; Bugs does smell like rainbows. Thanks everyone for being a good friend to Bugs. He loves this Shaw community!
The bottle cap drive is ongoing! Please bring your plastic bottle caps to school in a Ziplock bag and drop them off at the front table. Thank you for saving your caps.
We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards
Here’s my email: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Thank you, Ryan, for our stainless-steel cabinets! You rock!
