Message from the Principal . . .
The “Yowls for Towels” project, the Key Club car wash, and “club day” are a great reminder that we are so much more than just “a school”. We are a place which provides students with opportunities that help define their identity. Clubs give students opportunities to expand their horizons, explore various interests, and build life-long lasting skills and friendships. Also, many of the clubs are connected to service projects which give students an opportunity to give back to the community but it is the students who receive the most gain from these types of experiences. According to Shelley Billig of the RMC corporation, community service can lead to :
· increasing students’ personal, interpersonal and social development
· increasing motivation, student engagement, and school attendance
· and, helping students gain new perspectives and more positive lifestyle choices and behavior.
But of course, none of this would be possible without the club sponsors and coaches who invest hundreds of hours in the afternoons and weekends each year scheduling fun activities and service projects, and helping students with fund raising. Thank you for all that you do in shaping our future leaders.
In other news, tomorrow evening we will be hosting our Annual Title I Meeting/Open House. I am always looking for ways to better provide information to our parents. Here is the link to an English and a Spanish video I created for parents using Movie Maker and uploaded to YouTube.
HAPPENINGS
- "Yowls for Towels, Paws for a Cause" - Our Vet Assisting class will be collecting used towels and blankets to help our 4-legged friends at the Humane Society of Naples. Collections will be in Mustang Alley during both high school and adult lunch times beginning Tuesday, September 2nd through Tuesday, September 9th. Help support our vet assisting students and bring your towels and blankets.
The Student Services Team will be cheering on our great adult students! Serving coffee, juice and donuts on Friday, September 26th from 7:30 a.m.- 7:50 a.m. in Mustang Alley. This LWIT Connections event is the first in a series. In addition to cheering on their students they will be showing their team spirit by wearing their favorite team jersey or shirt. Stop by for some morning fun on your way to class! Please let your students know so they can arrive early on that day and take advantage of the coffee, juice, and donuts.
REMINDERS
- Tech Tool Tuesdays are returning! These optional half-hour workshops will focus on one quick and dirty technique for improving your productivity or a cool tool to introduce in your class for teaching/learning purposes. Using either a computer or an iPad, your investment in the 30 minutes will not only increase your technology skills, but will provide you with a MIP point if you also complete and submit the "homework." The first workshop is Tuesday, September 9th at 2:30pm on Kahoot! - check future Mustang Messages for more details and the LW wiki calendar for the scheduled dates.
- Volunteers are needed to plan the upcoming Advisory Committee Luncheon- committees include; door prizes, decorations, greeting program etc. Please let Denise Duzick know by September 9th if you are able to help.
- LWIT teachers - Heidi Duff has placed posters in your mailbox and around campus to alert you and your students about two new scholarship possibilities. Adult students who are veterans or a child of veteran and emergency service workers (i.e. police, fire, EMT, paramedic, etc) and/or their children are encouraged to apply. Please post in your class and alert your students. Applications are in student services and the deadline is September 19th.
- September 8th is the LWTHS Title I Annual Meeting/Open House. This is a mandatory event for high school teachers only. LWIT dual-enrollment teachers are not required to attend.
- Check your calendar for the fire drill scheduled this week.
- Our first School Advisory Council Meeting (SAC) is being held on 9/16 from 6:00-7:00 PM. We are looking for parent, teacher and community representatives. If you are interested in serving, please let Darlene Crete know at your earliest convenience.
- Deliberate Practice Plans are due on September 29th. Check out the LW wiki for the latest information on CTEM. Your assigned administrator will be emailing you additional information.
- The 4th Annual CCPS STEM Conference is being held on Saturday, October 11th at Golden Gate High School. Visit the CCPS website to submit a presentation proposal, register, or to find out more information. Last year, we had staff from LWIT/LWTHS conduct five presentations at the conference . This is a wonderful opportunity to remind the community that STEM is alive and well at LWIT/LWTHS.

Now that the fall semester has settled in, it is a good time to focus on how technology connects with our educational landscape. Consider 4 ways technology is changing how people learn:
Moving from individual learning to collaborative learning
Moving from passive learning to active learning
Differentiated learning and personalized learning are becoming more popular
Multitasking is more visible than ever
