21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
With 5 of our 6 winter sports in action over the last 7 days, we're certain that Dickie V would use the same terminology to describe the Brickies!!
It's time for BricksCenter baby!
Basketball
Dickie V often used the term "trifecta" to reference a 3-point shot. Well, the Lady Brickies had a trifecta of games this week with a road test @ Morton on Tuesday and back-to-back home contests over the weekend ... one of them SENIOR NIGHT!
On Tuesday, Hobart traveled to the Governor's Mansion to face Hammond Morton. Playing without 4 starters and some key reserves, the Lady Brickies were in uncharted territory. However, this was an opportunity for some younger players to gain valuable experience that could pay dividends down the stretch ... so it was GAME ON! After holding a slim lead early, Hobart trailed by 3 at the half. The Lady Govs extended the lead to 10 by the end of the 3rd and held on to win in spite of a FURIOUS BRICKIE RALLY in the final period. Final score: Morton 42, Hobart 32. Sophomore Asia Donald had possibly the 1st 20/20 game in Lady Brickie history as she finished with a whopping 24 points and 20 rebounds! Freshman Emma Ortiz scored 5 to go with her 6 rebounds and a team-high 6 steals in the loss.
Friday was SENIOR NIGHT as the Lady Brickies hosted NCC rival Highland. This ... was ... a ... BATTLE! Highland jumped out to a 10-1 lead after 8 minutes as their seemed to be a lid on the Hobart rim. Our girls STORMED BACK to tie the game at 18 as the halftime buzzer sounded!! The 2nd half was back-n-forth as each team WORK WORK WORKed to gain control. Highland was able to connect on some key 3-pointers, which enabled them to escape with a hard fought 53-43 win. Donald once again led Hobart with a game-high 27 points. Senior Ariah Rivera added 6 and classmates Lexi Williams and Dillen Pendleton each scored 3.
On Saturday afternoon, River Forest visited The Friendly City and the Lady Brickies bounced back BIGTIME after dropping the 1st two games of the week. Hobart led by 10 at the half and never looked back in cruising to a CONVINCING 56-34 VICTORY! Donald (16) and Williams (11) each registered double-figures in the points column of the stat sheet as 8 different Lady Brickies scored in the win!
Hobart is currently 5-7 overall and 0-4 in NCC action. Two more home games dot the landscape this week ... a Tuesday night affair with Chesterton and the final NCC game of the year on Friday night against Lowell. LET'S GOOOOOOOO LADIES!!
#SHEGOTGAME
Boys
The Hobart Brickies boys basketball team FINALLY opened their 2020-2021 ... actually, it's just their 2021 now ... season this past week with a pair of games on the road. Coach Brown and his staff would certainly earn a place on Dickie V's "ALL INNOVATIVE TEAM" for staying focused and keeping our boys motivated through a delayed start, a COVID shutdown, and multiple postponements. How would our guys handle 8 weeks of practice before the 1st tip of the season? THEY WERE AWESOME BABY!
Tuesday, the Brickies traveled West on Ridge Road to face Griffith. It was our season opener, but game #7 for the Panthers. Clearly the added prep time was helpful as Hobart jumped out to an early 23-12 lead in the 2nd quarter and held on for an EXCITING 43-37 VICTORY!! Sophomore Keith Mullins (13pts) and senior Max Jancich (11pts) each scored in double-figures ... Jancich didn't even miss a shot as he went 4/4 from inside the arc and buried his only 3pt attempt! Senior Fabian Salazar-Bernal was a "windex man" as he cleaned the glass for a team-high 8 rebounds in the win!!
On Thursday, our boys headed just north of Ridge Road for a neighborhood battle against River Forest! Once again, Hobart jumped ahead early thanks to some lock-down D-D-D-DEFENSE & timely shooting and carried a lead into the halftime break. The Ingots tried to rally coming out of the locker room, but couldn't rattle the Brickies as OUR BOYS SHINED down the stretch to earn their 2nd consecutive VICTORY by the score of 58-44! This time, it was senior Quinten White who joined Mullins in double-figures as each notched 16 points to lead the offensive attack! Actually, Hobart was well-balanced as Jancich also added 8 pts and Salazar-Bernal & junior Jaydon Hence each scored 7 in the win! Salazar-Bernal was once again the leading rebounder for the Bricks with 13 to go along with his 4 assists ... Jancich backed him up with 8 rebounds to help Hobart begin the year with consecutive victories!
The Brickies are 2-0 and will be back in action two more times this week ... a Wednesday night home-opener against Chesterton and another road contest @ Marquette Catholic on Saturday afternoon. DON'T STOP NOW BOYS!

Swimming/Diving
Just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water ... only kidding, the SCOH Aquatic Center is a fantastic facility for a swim :). Still, it had been a while since the Brickies had a meet ... 3 and a half weeks to be precise. Fortunately, a pair of home meets this past week gave our kids a chance to splash against someone else for a change and it was FANTASTIC!
On Tuesday night, the Lady Brickies hosted another NCC double-dual meet ... this time around the competing teams were Highland and Lowell. Apparently all that practice time paid off because Hobart barely broke a sweat in DOMINATING both the Trojans (136-42) & Devils (129-48)!
Even though the Lady Brickies already celebrated "SENIOR NIGHT" before the holidays, Tuesday was definitely a night when our SENIORS SHINED!! 4 Hobart seniors combined to WIN 9 of the 12 events - UNBELIEVABLE!! Alivia Ahner won Diving & the 100 Back, Delaney O'Brien won the 50 & 100 Free, Emma Wright scored VICTORIES in both the 200 Free & 100 Fly, Ana Tepavcevich took 1st in the 100 Breast, and all 4 shared the podium by winning both the 200 Medley & 200 Free Relays! Saturday morning, Hobart welcomed the LaPorte Slicers to town for what turned out to be our closest meet of the season! The Lady Brickies were again FANTASTIC ... placing 1st in 6 of 12 events ... but it wasn't enough as LaPorte had just a little more depth in the water and escaped the Friendly City with a narrow 93-91 win. Wright (200 Free, 100 Back) & O'Brien (50 & 100 Free) were again double-winners, Ahner & junior Sydney Arias once again went 1-2 in diving, and Tepavcevich also brought home an individual win in the 100 Breast for the 2nd time this week.
Here are results from Saturday's nonconference meet against the Slicers:

The Lady Brickies are 6-3 overall on the season and 3-1 in the NCC. The next 6 days will be HUGE as Merrillville visits the Aquatic Center on Thursday and the NCC Championships are Saturday @ Munster. WE ... WE BELIEVE ... WE BELIEVE THAT ... you know the rest :)
Boys
The Brickie boys also squared off with Highland & Lowell on Tuesday night in the HHS Aquatic Center. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, but 3+ weeks of practice was just what our guys needed as they swam EXTREMELY WELL! The final scores showed Highland (88-67) and Lowell (125-47) leaving town with hard-earned victories, but they also showed that our guys are continuing to close the gap on our competitors and getting better every week! Batman & Robin ... aka juniors Ethan Ferba & Hayden Maggio ... made their weekly appearance in The HIGHLIGHT ZONE by placing 1-2 on the diving board for the 5th consecutive time!
Here are results from Tuesday's meet:
200 Medley Relay - 2nd = sophomore Owen Finch, senior Chad Tomaga, junior Nathaniel Mamushe & freshman Brett Herrin
200 Free - 5th = Tomaga
200 IM - 3rd = Mamushe
50 Free - 4th = Finch, 6th = junior Ethan Sy, 8th = freshman Luke Weinman
Diving - 1st - junior Ethan Ferba, 2nd = junior Hayden Maggio, 4th = freshman Ethan Robles
100 Fly - 2nd = Mamushe
100 Free - 5th = Sy, 6th = Herrin, 7th = Weinman
500 Free - 5th = Finch
200 Free Relay - 3rd = Tomaga, Finch, Weinman & Mamushe
100 Breast - 3rd = Tomaga, 5th = Herrin
After showing marked improvement on Tuesday, the Brickies continued that trend on Saturday morning against LaPorte! The DIVAMIC DUO, Ferba & Maggio, extended their streak of 1-2 finishes on the diving board to 6! Ferba was RIDICULOUS as he became only the 2nd Brickie EVER to surpass the 300-point mark!! Junior Jeydan "The Pied" Fifer was OUTSTANDING as he notched THRILLING VICTORIES in both the 50 (by 0.07 seconds) and 100 FREE (by 0.30 seconds)!! Fifer was joined by teammates Owen Finch, Chad Tomaga & Nathaniel Mamushe on the podium after winning both the 200 Medley and Free Relays!! In spite of all the AMAZING performances by our boys, LaPorte was unfortunately able to leave town with a 96-75 victory. Still, our boys are SHINING brighter every week ... and with their NCC Championship meet 2 weeks away, it looks like they are finding their groove at just the right time!
Here are results from Saturday's meet:
200 Medley Relay - 1st = sophomore Owen Finch, senior Chad Tomaga, junior Nathaniel Mamushe & junior Jeydan Fifer
200 Free - 2nd = Finch, 4th = freshman Brett Herrin, 5th = junior Ethan Sy

100 Fly - 2nd = Mamushe, 3rd = sophomore Noah Bailey
100 Free - 1st Fifer, 3rd = Finch, 5th = Weinman
200 Free Relay - 1st = Tomaga, Mamushe, Finch & Fifer
100 Back - 3rd = Sy
100 Breast - 2nd = Tomaga, 4th = Herrin, 5th = Bailey
Hobart is still searching for their 1st W of the season, but their success is evident with how well they competed this past week! Merrillville visits the Aquatic Center on Thursday - could that be the one? We ... WE BELIEVE ... WE BELIEVE THAT ... need I say more?

Wrestling
On Thursday, the Brickies hosted their last home dual meet of the season against Northwest Crossroads Conference foe Kankakee Valley. Starting at 170lbs in the varsity competition, junior Jacob Simpson won a THRILLING match against his Kougar counterpart 1-0 to get things going! Roughly an hour later, senior Tyler Turley put the final nail in the coffin with a 1st period PIN @ the 160lb weight class and Hobart WON by the score of 54-18! The victory improved the Brickies NCC record to 4-0 on the season with 1 week until the conference championship!
Saturday, Hobart traveled to Mishawaka for the Penn Quad. After wrestling at the Class 3A TEAM STATE a week ago against some of the best the state had to offer, the Penn Quad also put us to the test with matches against Penn, Bloomington South, and FW Carroll. Traveling without multiple starters in the 12-man lineup, Hobart competed like CHAMPIONS all day long at Penn High School! Junior Trevor Schammert went 3-0 on the day @ 113 lbs with a pin and a major decision among his 3 victories ... classmate Donovan Ruiz went undefeated @ 120 lbs ... and both senior Jaden Skimehorn (126 lbs) & sophomore Trevor Triana (138 lbs) earned hard fought victories for the Brickies!
Hobart has a busy week ahead with meets @ Munster on Tuesday ... @ Hammond Gavit on Wednesday ... and the NCC CHAMPIONSHIP meet on Saturday, which will take place at HHS under the watchful eyes of Yohan Balash :). It's been a bumpy #BRICKRODE at times for the 2020-2021 Brickies, but those bumps have only solidified the resolve of Coach Cook and our boys to SHINE on the mat with PRIDE!! Another NCC title will be on the line this upcoming Saturday ... followed by the sectional two weeks later at Portage. TWWWOOOOOOOO championships up for grabs in a TWWWOOOOOO week timeframe - this is what we WORK WORK WORK for!! LET'S GOOOOOOO!!
