In The Know
Summative Assessment in Distance Learning - https://www.edutopia.org/article/summative-assessment-distance-learning This is an excellent and brief article that supports the conversation we had in out last staff meeting. I think it is very important that you read this in advance of our Ten Minutes of Teaching on Wednesday.
Teacher Appreciation Notes - Look forward to receiving a special note in your mailbox. We are so thankful for all the hard work and patience you have demonstrated this year with the quarantine and a generally very big year. I am amazed and impressed with work you do for students.
Professional Development - Please consider reading this Edutopia article on Summative Assessment in Distance Learning (https://www.edutopia.org/article/summative-assessment-distance-learning). We will be incorporating this content into our upcoming staff meeting discussions and continuing this focus next year as we continue to place student needs first.
Staff Check Out - Will are going to engage the Teacher Check Out Process in two phases. Phase 1 will be making sure you have cleared out of your room by May 22. Phase two will focus on signing TalentEd forms and submitting final grades by the middle of June. Jill will be sending an email with two links for Phase One of the Teacher Classroom checkout process. The first form is a simple 'pick your date' option. You will simply indicate which date between now and 5/22 you will come into the building to clear your classrooms. The second link is the check out form itself. We are moving to a digital checkout form, which will make it easier to record who has completed the process. It should also make things easier to do.
Google Classroom Awareness - Please check in on your settings with Google Classroom. There are a few settings or clarification that will help students and families experience more understanding and success.
1) Arrange your “classwork” tab, so the newest assignments are on top (which is great and super easy to navigate). Please avoid having students scroll and remember dates, or prevent assignments from being out of order.
2) If you post several assignments at once and expect students to only complete 2-3 of them, be sure to communicate as strongly as possible that this is the case. Students and or parents are getting confused and this layer of communication can help out a lot in this area.
Grading Questions - I have received some questions about mid term grades and instead of answering individually, I will include everyone in this response. The question is about what grades are expected to be entered for mid term and what are the criteria for each grade. I will list them below along with criteria.
Pass (P) - This grade should be given for all students who are currently earning a 60% or higher in their respective classes. This does not mean that every assignment is submitted, but that the student has an earned at least 60% of the available points assigned to date.
Incomplete (I) - This grade is reserved for students who are currently earning less than 60% of available points. This grade should not be given as a mid term mark simply because a student has one or more missing assignments. Rather, only if the student is currently earning less than 60%. In the event a teacher is issuing this grade, there should be documented out reach to students/families leading up to mid terms. The teacher should also be actively engaging the student in developing a plan to earn a Pass. Teachers may benefit by being reminded that all students who earn an I for this term will have the chance to work on a credit assurance plan, developed and led by the teacher over the course of the entire next academic year.
Withdrawal (WD) - This grade should not be entered by a teacher and instead should be entered by registrar after the students counselor has spoken with the family to confirm that their student does not want to pursue credit during the school closure. I would also likely be in those conversations with the counselor / family to ensure we are doing all we can to address the challenges that family is facing given the context we are in.
