Connecting the Past to the Needs of the Present
Volume 1 Issue 5
Welcome to #r12socstud!
Today's social studies teacher has a difficult, powerful job. Society needs our students to understand the impact of past events in order to respond to present issues. Our students are changing and often fail to connect the events of the past to their present life. Our job as the educator is to help them make the connections.
I welcome feedback on the resources and will gladly look for information that you need to serve the students! Please reach out via email or on Twitter @owl_b_torresedu #r12socstud

Texas Archive of the Moving Image
By partnering with institutions and individuals across the state, TAMI digitizes and provides web access to thousands of moving images that offer insight to Texas’ history and culture. TAMI’s educational programs promote the sharing of Texas moving images via screenings, demonstrations, and lectures at venues across the state. TAMI also works with educators to encourage the use of Texas film in the K-12 social studies classroom.
Teaching Tolerance
Teaching Tolerance provides free resources to educators—teachers, administrators, counselors and other practitioners—who work with children from kindergarten through high school. Our program emphasizes social justice and anti-bias. The anti-bias approach encourages children and young people to challenge prejudice and learn how to be agents of change in their own lives.
Digital Tool Highlight: Google Earth
Google Earth is a game changer in the classroom and it brings geography lessons to a whole new level by providing an immersive interactive experience for students.
It gives students a richer hands-on experience and a better point of reference. As an example, while looking through images in a textbook is great, it doesn’t offer the same understanding as virtually walking down the streets of Japan using Google Earth. The video below will give you a brief overview of the tools available through Google Earth.
