Holiday Party and Winter Sing
On December 20, the students will be making a special holiday ornament for our Winter Party , and other entertaining activities from 1:20 to 2:55. Kids will be listening to festive music and will be enjoying each other's company.
The annual Rose Glen Winter sing will be Friday, December 20th at 3:00.
Our Learning
Literacy:
We are currently working through Unit 3 which asks the question, how can taking action impact society? The students have identified text structures in nonfiction texts such as description, sequence, compare & contrast, problem & solution, and cause & effect. They have also discussed and identified the author's purpose for writing texts such as to persuade, inform or to entertain. During independent reading, we are impressed with the number of chapter books being read on a daily basis.
In writing, the students are crafting a persuasive paper. Their topic is one that impacts society. They are learning how intentional wording gets their audience to think in their favor and grab their attention.
Math
The fifth grade students have finished up with the first part of Unit 3: Write and Interpret Numerical Expressions. We used the Fosnot lessons that are based on the story by Mark Twain -The Celebtrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County - to develop equivalence and its use in solving algebraic problems. The context of a frog jumping along a track is used to foster number line representations in which students solve for an unknown amount, which is usually the length of a frog jump.
The Big Ideas for This Fosnot Unit
- an algebraic expression can be treated as an object (not only as a procedure)
- variation: variables describe relationships and not merely unknown quantities
- equivalence: algebraic expressions can appear different yet be equivalent objects
- equivalent expressions can be used interchangeably
- equivalent amounts can be separated off
- equivalent expressions can be operated on, by + or -, x and รท, to give new equivalencies
The learning concepts that we are now solving mathematical expressions by following Order of Operations. We will then continue with writing and interpreting expression in real world situations or word problems.

Science
The essential question : What are the properties of Matter?
NGSS Performance Expectation(s)
Next Generation Science Standards
5-PS1-1. Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.
5-PS1-2. Measure and graph quantities to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved.
5-PS1-3. Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties
5-PS1-4. Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.
Six Flags Reading Program
Six Flags Reading Program
For completing 6 hours of reading outside of school time, students in kindergarten through grade 5 are eligible to earn a free ticket for Six Flags Great America. The Six Flags reading program has changed to eReading and families will need to go online, enter the classroom code and then keep track of their children's reading minutes electronically. A reading log for you to use to keep track of your reader's progress has been sent home this week. if you choose to have your child(ren) participate in this program, please use your child's classroom code which is linked below.
Your child may begin reading and recording his/her reading minutes any time! Completed reading logs are due by Friday, April 16th.
Please note: Six Flags does not allow 4K students to participate in this program.
Any questions can be directed to Mrs. Krahn, Rose Glen's coordinator for Read to Succeed.
