Letter from Dr. Eicher
Dear John Burroughs Families,
We had an amazing end to the month of October at John Burroughs Elementary School. This past week Dublin Dance visited with our students in a whole school assembly to celebrate the art of dance. Dublin Dance presented our students with a wide variety of dance styles from classical to modern. The best part of all was when the Dublin Dance students were teaching our students several dance moves as the entire school joined in celebration together. It was also wonderful to see so many of our John Burroughs families come to watch the student harvest parade this past Friday afternoon. Students also celebrated the end of October with a variety of engaging, science-themed experiments earlier that day. What an engaging, exciting, and fun end to October!
It is hard to believe that it is already November, and we are entering our fourth month of school with the second quarter already underway. Thanksgiving is right around the corner. The month of November is shaping up to be another month full of activities and opportunities. As the weather turns cooler, please ensure that your child has a coat and gloves for the playground. Also, a friendly reminder that all students must be picked up each day no later than 3:30 pm and dropped off no earlier than 8:30 am. Picture Day is Thursday, November 17th.
I wanted to let you know that there is no school for students on Tuesday, November 8th due to a district-wide professional development day as well as no school during Wellness Week which is November 21 through 25, 2022. This coming Wednesday, November 2nd I would like to invite you to join us in the cafeteria from 9:15 until 10:00 am for our annual Breakfast with Books celebration which is part of Columbus City Schools literacy initiative.
The month of November also brings a great deal of teaching and learning experiences. During the week of October 31st through November 4, our third-grade students will be taking the Third Grade Ohio State Reading Test. Successful performance on this state assessment is one pathway to the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. Our second-grade students will be taking the NNMAT3 (Naglieri Ability Test), and the fifth graders will take the Cognitive Abilities Test which are ways that the district identifies students who may be gifted in reading and/or math. Our fifth graders will be traveling to Ohio Dominican University on November 10th as part of Columbus City Schools initiative to ensure that every fifth grader gets the opportunity to visit a college campus before matriculating to middle school. Our fifth graders will also be traveling to the Scioto Audubon Park on November 16th (Goldman) and 18th (Sparks) to complete a study of habitats. Our students not only study science in the classroom but get to do science in nature.
From the students and staff at John Burroughs Elementary School I would like to wish you a happy, healthy, and safe Thanksgiving as we join with family and friends to celebrate all those things for which we are so very thankful. Happy Thanksgiving!

Classroom News!
Burroughs Student Shout-outs
Teachers will be shouting out our Burroughs students with a Tootle!!
A Tootle is a way to recognize students that are showing positive behaviors! It is the OPPOSITE of a tattle!
When teachers see a student that has shown great leadership they will write them a Tootle that includes the positive behavior they saw! These Tootles will be collected in the school office. Dr. Eicher will pull out some Tootles every Friday and read them over the announcements. The students that are chosen will come to the office to get their Tootle and a small prize. Ask your student about the Tootles that are read!
Reading Buddies!
We are pleased to announce that Burroughs Elementary will be restarting our Reading Buddies Program for the 2022-2023 school year. We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential. In order for students to be successful in school, they may need extra support from home, school and the community. Becoming a reading buddy volunteer will help us close some learning gaps, encourage a love for reading, build confidence and definitely brighten the day of many students.
This year, we will be servicing second and third grade students. Reading Buddies will meet on Wednesdays from 11:00-12:30. Each volunteer will be assigned to a specific teacher’s classroom to read with one student for 30 minutes and then read with another students for an additional 30 minutes. No experience necessary. Training will be provided.
If you are interested in volunteering as a reading buddy, please contact our Reading Coach, Ms. Morgan tmorgan@columbus.k12.oh.us
