The News about Nichols Middle School!
Name: Scott Phillips
School/Role: School Resource Officer
How long you have been with NMS and in what capacity: This is my second year at NMS.
Brief summary about your background/past experience in education: I was in the Air Force for four years. I have been on the Middleboro Police Department for almost 8 years. I also have a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice.
What you like best about Middleboro and working at NMS? I love that I get to meet these kids at such an influential time of their lives. Knowing I’m going to see them grow up, graduate high school and enter the community as young adults is awesome.
Fun fact about yourself: I went to four baseball stadiums in 2019. Fenway (obviously), Yankee Stadium, Busch Stadium in St Louis and Marlins Park in Miami. My friends and I are planning to go to at least one new ballpark every year.
Best day of your life: The day my kids were born, with my wedding day coming in a close second.
Favorite season: Spring
Favorite holiday: Thanksgiving
Favorite music: I listen to all types of music, but country is definitely my favorite.
Best movie (or actor): Rocky IV
Best TV show: 24

A Note About Attendance:
Last year the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education made a slight change to the system they use to hold schools accountable. DESE now holds schools accountable for the number of students that are “chronically absent” over the course of the year. Chronically absent means missing school 10% of the time…..or 2 days per month, 9 for the first half of the year or 18 over the course of the year.
Research has shown a direct correlation between student performance and attendance. Missing just 2 days per month can have a negative impact on student performance. Those days can add up fast over the year and we need your help. Poor school attendance not only impacts your child but also our school overall.
We fully understand that kids will miss school. Things come up, life happens and kids need to be out. Overall, however, we ask that you please do your best to ensure that your child is present on school days.
Should you have any questions about this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact us!
